Leicester City have submitted a loan bid for Swiss international goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, according to reports.
The 31-year-old’s club, Borussia Monchengladbach, are pushing to include a purchase option or obligation in any agreement, Sky Germany report.
The Bundesliga team also require a replacement before they can approve Omlin’s departure, it is stated.
City currently have only two senior goalkeepers in their roster following the exit of three players. Daniel Iversen and Danny Ward were let go at the end of their contracts, while Mads Hermansen was transferred to West Ham for £18m.
Veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is City’s sole acquisition of the summer thus far, the 38-year-old joining to back up new primary goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.
Twenty-year-old Stevie Bausor would be City’s third-choice goalkeeper as it stands, but he has yet to feature in any senior matches.
It is customary for clubs to maintain three senior players in a goalkeeping unit, and this has been the practice at City for much of the past decade.
Thus, a move for another goalkeeper was always likely as the transfer window nears its conclusion.
Omlin has been the primary goalkeeper at most clubs he has played for. He was included in the Swiss Super League team of the year for two consecutive seasons while at Basel, securing a transfer to Montpellier.
He was the top goalkeeper there for two-and-a-half seasons until he was signed to be the primary goalkeeper at Monchengladbach in January 2023.
However, over the past two seasons, he has only managed to participate in 19 of 68 Bundesliga matches due to a series of injuries, including a shoulder problem that necessitated surgery and sidelined him for nearly seven months.
Last season, Moritz Nicolas took over from Omlin after he sustained a calf injury, and the Swiss keeper could not reclaim his position upon regaining fitness.
He did play the latter part of the season, however, as Monchengladbach’s captain, after Nicolas himself suffered an injury.
This season, Nicolas has begun as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Omlin remaining an unused substitute in their first two competitive matches of the campaign.
