Hoops-mad singer Sir Rod Stewart unleashed a scathing attack on embattled Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy after his disastrous start in charge of the Glasgow giants, having lost five of his opening seven matches. He now faces his first Old Firm showdown on Saturday against a Rangers side in strong form.
Another humiliating defeat could spell the end of the Frenchman’s troubled tenure, with the Maggie May star even wishing his fiercest rivals “good luck” ahead of the clash. He shared his brutal criticism of the Parkhead boss via his Instagram story – while also confirming he would be travelling back to Scotland for the match.
Stewart filmed his tirade from the gym in his Los Angeles home, which is decorated with signed Celtic shirts. He even suggested he would prefer his beloved side to lose on Saturday if it meant accelerating Nancy’s exit.
It was the nature of Celtic’s loss to Motherwell on Tuesday night that infuriated Sir Rod, with the Glasgow outfit creating very little in a 2-0 defeat, as Motherwell comfortably brushed aside the reigning champions. The result compounded Nancy’s problems, with supporters increasingly turning against him.
Sir Rod said:
“I didn’t sleep last night and I’ll tell you why. We were beaten, Celtic that is – and I love the Celtic as you can see – by a very good Motherwell team, who in my opinion play very good, modern football. They kept attacking and attacking and it was made easy by our backline who don’t seem to exist.
“We were humiliated, really humiliated. Where is this all going to end? Is Nancy going to go, is he going to be sacked like Russell Martin maybe, or is he going to continue and we’re going to keep losing? He’s now won two games out of seven and apparently the worst manager we ever had [John Barnes] got sacked after eight losses over 29 games over six months.
“Then he was fired. But it looks like this guy is going to continue. It breaks my heart. Should we give him a chance in January? I don’t know. It looks like it’s going to stay. I come from a football family, we all love football. I remember my mum once said football has caused more distress in arguments in football than Adolf Hitler. So with that thought in mind I will be up here on Saturday to watch the Celtic. And good luck Rangers!”
