MARTIN O’NEILL has been spotted at Glasgow Airport as Celtic fans wait for confirmation of his appointment as permanent manager.
We told you last week that the Parkhead board had settled on the 74-year-old Hoops icon over rival Robbie Keane for the position.
But the club have still not officially confirmed his return as manager on a permanent basis.
The experienced coach guided Celtic to a league and cup double last season after stepping in not once but twice during a turbulent period in Glasgow’s east end.
He was initially appointed as interim boss following the shock exit of Brendan Rodgers in October but departed after the club opted to bring in Wilfried Nancy.
However, the Frenchman struggled to settle in Scotland and was dismissed just 33 days later, prompting Celtic to turn back to O’Neill.
O’Neill engineered a remarkable improvement in form from January onwards, eventually guiding Celtic past Hearts in a dramatic Scottish Premiership title race that went down to the final day.
He later added to his legacy at the club by securing a ninth trophy during his Celtic tenure, following victory over Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final.
With pre-season training only weeks away, Celtic are also preparing for a packed schedule of friendlies, including high-profile matches against AC Milan and Wolves in July.
Before that, however, attention briefly shifts away from club football due to international duty and World Cup preparations.
O’Neill was recently seen at Glasgow Airport, where he was photographed among Scotland supporters departing for North America to back the national team.
The veteran manager was seen in the airport departure area with his passport and boarding pass visible in hand.
At this stage, it remains unclear where he was travelling or the purpose of the trip.
Over the years, O’Neill has featured as a pundit for broadcasters including talkSPORT, the BBC and ITV, although he was not listed among their confirmed World Cup broadcasting personnel.
