Soufiane El-Faouzi is set to make a decision on his future this month, with Celtic among the sides keeping a close eye on his situation ahead of the summer window.
The FC Schalke 04 midfielder only arrived at the club last summer, but reports indicate he is already open to a possible move as interest builds following a strong campaign.
According to German outlet Ruhr, the 23-year-old will weigh up his options at the end of the season, with a number of clubs showing interest.
El-Faouzi has played an important role in Schalke’s push for a return to the Bundesliga, featuring in 32 matches and registering two goals and five assists.
The Hoops are bracing for a significant summer rebuild once the season wraps up, with the squad in need of major changes, while a permanent manager is still to be appointed with Martin O’Neill due to step aside at the end of the campaign.
But despite only arriving at Schalke last summer, German outlet Ruhr report that the playmaker is open to a move and will make a decision on his next step at the end of the season.
Addressing his future, El-Faouzi said last week: “It’s a compliment to hear things like that. As a player, you notice it.
“Nevertheless, the focus now is on the final games and less on individual players.”
And at this stage, a pathway appears to be opening up for the Hoops to make an early move in the summer, with Sheffield United no longer considered a potential destination.
The attention from Glasgow is not unique.
Sunderland, Brentford and Bologna are also believed to be monitoring the midfielder, meaning Celtic would have to come out on top in a competitive chase to land his signature.
With the player open to a transfer and a decision approaching, this is a situation that could move quickly once the campaign comes to a close.
Celtic could be facing a scenario where several of their first choice midfielders depart this summer.
Reports surfaced last night that Arne Engels intends to leave Celtic in the upcoming window. There was strong interest in him during the winter, and that has not disappeared. There could well be a bidding battle for the player in the summer.
