NafisaCeltic’s recruitment team have spent much of the summer identifying young talent capable of strengthening the squad for both domestic and European competition.
With questions remaining over several midfield positions and the possibility of departures before the transfer window closes, the club have been casting a wide net across the continent in search of players capable of making an immediate impact.
Martin O’Neill and the Celtic hierarchy have reportedly been keen to lower the average age of the squad while maintaining the quality required to compete in the Champions League.
As a result, a number of emerging talents from Scandinavia have found themselves linked with a move to Parkhead in recent weeks.
One player in particular had generated significant excitement among supporters after being identified as a potential addition to Celtic’s midfield department.
However, despite strong interest and extensive scouting, it now appears that the highly-rated youngster has chosen a different path.
Celtic have been dealt a setback in their pursuit of BK Häcken star Silas Andersen after the midfielder agreed a lucrative move elsewhere.
The 21-year-old Denmark Under-21 international had been attracting attention from several clubs across Europe following a series of impressive displays in Sweden.
Andersen was understood to be one of the midfielders admired by Celtic’s recruitment department as the club explored options ahead of a potentially transformative summer window.
However, according to reports from Denmark, Sporting CP have won the race for his signature after reaching an agreement worth around £6.5million.
The Portuguese giants had been locked in negotiations with Häcken for several weeks and have now reportedly shaken hands on a deal that could rise to approximately £8.65million through performance-related add-ons.
A sell-on clause is also believed to be included in the agreement.
The talented midfielder is now scheduled to travel to Lisbon, where a medical examination has already been arranged for Saturday before he signs a long-term contract running until 2031.
The move effectively ends any lingering hopes Celtic had of convincing the youngster to make the switch to Glasgow.
Andersen’s representative, Niclas Jensen, recently acknowledged that major clubs from Germany and Portugal had entered the race for his client, making it increasingly difficult for other interested sides to compete.
While Celtic remained admirers of the player, the financial package and sporting opportunity offered by Sporting proved decisive.
The Portuguese champions will now secure one of Scandinavia’s most highly-rated young midfielders, while Celtic are expected to turn their focus towards alternative targets as preparations continue for the new campaign.
For Andersen, the next chapter of his career now looks set to begin in Portugal rather than Scotland, with only the completion of his medical standing between him and a blockbuster move to one of Europe’s most respected talent-developing clubs.
