Celtic midfielder Arne Engels is drawing transfer interest from Germany, with RB Leipzig weighing up a move to prise him away from Parkhead.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Leipzig are keeping a close watch on the Celtic standout as part of their transfer shortlist.

Engels has impressed in Celtic colours this season, delivering strong midfield displays on a consistent basis.

The 22-year-old has netted four goals and fashioned five big chances in 27 Scottish Premiership outings this campaign.

He has registered five goals and seven assists in 42 appearances across all competitions, earning recognition as a Belgian international along the way.

“Arne has been fantastic since he walked in the door. Big price tag, big expectation, and he has handled it so, so well,” Celtic captain Callum McGregor said (via the BBC).

Engels is an outstanding midfielder, and there is still a sense that more can come from his game. Celtic would be parting with a real talent if they allowed him to leave this summer.

However, while Leipzig’s interest is understandable, a move may not be as simple or appealing for Engels as it might initially seem.

The Bundesliga side already have depth in midfield and may find it difficult to guarantee him regular minutes next season.

Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Seiwald and Christoph Baumgartner already provide a strong and balanced core in central areas.

Meanwhile, highly rated youngster Assan Ouedraogo has returned from injury.

There is also the presence of talented midfielder Ezekiel Banzuzi, who continues to be highly valued within the club.

Competition is already intense at Leipzig, to the point where Arthur Vermeeren has struggled for opportunities despite arriving with high expectations.

That reality is something Celtic should highlight if Leipzig move to firm up their interest.

Engels is currently playing week in, week out, developing quickly and flourishing under pressure at a major club.

A switch to Germany could easily disrupt that momentum. Convincing him that his pathway at Celtic remains the better option may prove vital this summer.
