Premier League Issues Unexpected Official Statement to Explain Why Leeds Goal Was STOLEN Against Bournemouth!

Leeds United were left frustrated after seeing what appeared to be an early breakthrough against Bournemouth overturned by VAR, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s celebrations cut short by a controversial handball decision.

Daniel Farke’s side had made an encouraging start at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday and thought they had taken the lead when the striker found the net. However, the goal was disallowed following a review, leaving Leeds to continue their search for an opening goal.

The Premier League has since issued an official explanation of the incident, making clear why the officials intervened and why Calvert-Lewin’s effort could not stand.

The decision became one of the major talking points from a difficult afternoon for Leeds, who eventually suffered a 2-0 defeat despite their promising start.

Premier League explains why Calvert-Lewin’s goal was disallowed

The incident occurred in the 12th minute, when Leeds produced an impressive attacking move involving Harry Wilson and Jayden Bogle.

The full-back eventually found Calvert-Lewin inside the penalty area, where the striker turned the ball towards goal. Although Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic had initially kept out his effort, the ball came back off the Leeds forward and ended up in the net.

Leeds briefly celebrated what they believed was the opening goal, but VAR intervened after identifying contact between the ball and Calvert-Lewin’s left arm immediately before it crossed the line.

The Premier League Match Centre subsequently explained the decision in a statement published on X.

It read: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal to Leeds United – and determined that Calvert-Lewin handled the ball immediately before scoring and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

The officials also provided further clarification through the VAR communication.

“The ball accidentally comes off Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s left arm before going directly into the goal”.

The referee then confirmed the final decision after reviewing the incident.

“After review, the ball strikes the arm of Leeds No.9 – the final decision is a free-kick.”

The key detail was not whether Calvert-Lewin deliberately handled the ball. The Premier League’s explanation acknowledged that the contact was accidental, but the fact that the ball came directly off his arm and into the net meant the goal had to be ruled out under the handball rules.

Why the decision proved so costly for Leeds

The timing of the decision made it particularly frustrating for Farke’s team.

Leeds had started brightly and looked capable of troubling a Bournemouth side that had been enjoying an impressive run of results. Calvert-Lewin’s disallowed effort would have given them an opportunity to take control of the contest and put pressure on the hosts.

Instead, the score remained goalless, and Bournemouth gradually found their way into the game.

The home side took the lead in the 31st minute after a costly mistake from Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford. His attempted pass out from the back was intercepted by Justin Kluivert, who quickly squared the ball for Evanilson to finish into an unguarded net.

That left Leeds facing an uphill task after a first half in which they had initially looked the more threatening side.

The Whites continued searching for an equaliser after the interval, but they struggled to turn possession into clear opportunities. Their hopes of rescuing something from the match were finally ended in stoppage time when Amine Adli scored Bournemouth’s second goal.

The Cherries secured a 2-0 victory, while Leeds were left to reflect on an afternoon when several important moments went against them.

Mike Dean gives his reaction to the controversial call

The disallowed goal also attracted attention from former Premier League referee Mike Dean, who was asked to give his immediate assessment of the incident while speaking on Sky Sports.

Dean offered his view on the contact between the ball and Calvert-Lewin’s arm, saying: “I think it’s caught him on the inside of the bicep. It looks like a handball from behind the goal.”

Michael Dawson initially felt the decision was harsh, although his assessment changed after seeing further replays.

The incident therefore generated debate, particularly because the contact was accidental. However, the Premier League’s explanation focused on the fact that Calvert-Lewin handled the ball immediately before scoring, rather than suggesting that the striker deliberately used his arm.

For Leeds, the explanation will not change the outcome or the disappointment of seeing an important goal ruled out.

Farke left frustrated as Leeds suffer another setback

The defeat was another frustrating result for Leeds, who have now gone five Premier League matches without a victory.

Farke felt his team had done enough during the opening stages to deserve a better outcome, particularly before Bournemouth took advantage of Trafford’s mistake.

The German was disappointed that his players had travelled home without any points, but he also acknowledged that Leeds needed to be more decisive when opportunities presented themselves.

The manager’s frustration was understandable. His side had produced a promising opening, created opportunities and thought they had taken the lead, only for the VAR intervention to change the course of the afternoon.

Nevertheless, the Premier League has now made its position clear. The goal was disallowed because the ball accidentally struck Calvert-Lewin’s left arm before going directly into the net.

That explanation may settle the question of why the officials overturned the decision, but it does little to ease Leeds’ disappointment after another afternoon without a league victory.
