Rangers midfielder Minsu Kim has suffered an unexpected international setback after being left out of South Korea’s latest senior squad, despite only recently making his breakthrough at full international level.
The 21-year-old had seemingly taken an important step in his international career last month when he received his first senior call-up and made his debut for his country.
Kim was given opportunities to impress during South Korea’s run of international friendlies, featuring against Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela. He was also named among the substitutes for the encounter against Uzbekistan.
However, despite gaining valuable experience alongside some of South Korea’s established international stars, the Rangers youngster has not been included in the country’s latest senior squad.
South Korea are preparing for upcoming fixtures against Qatar and Saudi Arabia later this month, but Kim will not be part of the group selected for those matches.
Instead, the midfielder has received a rather different international assignment.
Kim drops down to South Korea’s Under-21 squad

Despite missing out on senior selection, Kim has not been completely overlooked by his country.
The Rangers youngster has been included in South Korea’s Under-21 squad for two upcoming friendly matches against Mexico, offering him another opportunity to represent his nation and continue developing at international level.
The squad also has an important long-term purpose, as it doubles as South Korea’s Olympic football team ahead of the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
That means the upcoming fixtures are more than just ordinary friendlies for the young players involved. They form part of the preparation and assessment process for a generation hoping to represent their country at the next Olympic tournament.
Kim will therefore have an opportunity to strengthen his position within the Under-21 setup while gaining further experience against international opposition.
South Korea boss explains importance of Mexico fixtures
South Korea Under-21 manager Kim Eun-joong has highlighted the value of facing a strong opponent like Mexico, with the two matches expected to provide an important test for his players.
He said:
“This is a good opportunity to gain practical experience against a strong team Mexico.
“We will identify areas for improvement and take our competitiveness up a level.”
The fixtures will take place at Cheonan, with the first meeting scheduled for November 14 before the two countries face each other again three days later at the same venue.
Kim will now travel back to his homeland for the double-header, giving him another chance to impress the national coaching staff.
What the decision means for Rangers

For Rangers, Kim’s latest international development presents an interesting situation.
His recent senior debut demonstrated that he had attracted the attention of South Korea’s senior coaching staff, but his absence from the latest squad means he will have to continue working towards establishing himself at that level.
Being selected for the Under-21s is not necessarily a negative development, particularly with the squad’s Olympic ambitions in mind.
At his age, regular opportunities to develop internationally could prove valuable, especially against opponents such as Mexico.
Kim will be hoping to use the two fixtures to make a strong impression and remind South Korea’s senior selectors of his potential.
For now, his immediate focus will be on the Under-21 assignment before returning to Rangers, where he will continue competing for opportunities at club level.
