Celtic supporters have been left stunned after Callum McGregor made some revealing comments about the club’s performances, with the captain’s words now attracting even greater attention following Sunday’s embarrassing defeat to Falkirk.
The reaction reflects the growing frustration surrounding Celtic, particularly after another performance that raised serious questions about the team’s organisation and ability to impose themselves on opponents.
What makes the situation even more uncomfortable is the timing. McGregor’s comments came after Celtic’s disappointing 2-2 draw with Dundee United, but Sunday’s events at Falkirk have given his assessment an entirely different significance.
MCGREGOR’S COMMENTS RAISE SERIOUS QUESTIONS
Speaking to The Scottish Sun recently after the Dundee United draw which translates to Sunday’s humiliation against Falkirk, McGregor did not hide his frustration with the way Celtic had performed.
The captain made a particularly blunt assessment of the team’s display, saying:
“We waste 45 minutes of football, we don’t really do things properly, the shape of the team isn’t right.”
Those words immediately stood out because they came from one of the most senior figures in the Celtic dressing room.
McGregor was not simply expressing disappointment over dropped points. His comments pointed towards deeper concerns about how the team were functioning and whether Celtic were consistently playing with the structure required to control matches.
For supporters, hearing such an assessment from their captain was alarming enough. However, the events that followed have made the comments even more difficult to ignore.
FALKIRK DEFEAT MAKES THE COMMENTS EVEN MORE DAMAGING
Celtic travelled to Falkirk hoping to respond positively, but the afternoon quickly turned into another nightmare.
The visitors conceded after just three minutes when Ethan Ross capitalised on a defensive error involving Cameron Carter-Vickers to put Falkirk ahead.
It was a disastrous start, leaving Celtic chasing the game almost immediately.
The Hoops had opportunities to respond, with Camilo Duran striking the post and Scott Bain being forced into important saves. But Celtic failed to make their attacking moments count.
Then, in the 38th minute, Scott Tanser doubled Falkirk’s advantage after finding space in the Celtic defence and firing beyond Sam Johnstone.
By half-time, Celtic were already 2-0 down.
That sequence made McGregor’s earlier comments particularly striking. The captain had spoken about the team wasting 45 minutes, and Celtic had now endured another opening half in which their opponents had taken complete advantage of their weaknesses.
SUPPORTERS HAVE REASONS TO BE WORRIED
The biggest concern for Celtic supporters is that the problems highlighted by McGregor were not immediately resolved.
The captain’s comments suggested that the team were struggling to get their shape right and perform their responsibilities properly. Against Falkirk, the early defensive lapse and the second goal exposed precisely the sort of issues that can make matches difficult.
Celtic cannot blame everything on missed chances or an inspired goalkeeping display. Scott Bain was outstanding, making 10 saves, but the visitors had already given themselves a mountain to climb before the break.
The second half brought more pressure from Celtic, but they could not find a way past their former goalkeeper.
Falkirk also had a third goal ruled out following a VAR review, further underlining how difficult the afternoon had become for the visitors.
MCGREGOR’S WARNING IS NOW HARDER TO IGNORE
There is a reason McGregor’s comments have attracted so much attention after the Falkirk result.
When a captain publicly expresses frustration with the team’s performances, supporters naturally expect those concerns to be addressed. Instead, Celtic have suffered another damaging defeat, with their first-half display providing fresh evidence of the difficulties McGregor had highlighted.
His words have also created an uncomfortable conversation around the team. If the captain himself recognises that something is not functioning properly, supporters will inevitably wonder why the same problems continue to appear on the pitch.
Celtic remain under pressure to produce a response, but the defeat at Falkirk has made it clear that the concerns are not disappearing.
For many supporters, the most alarming part is that McGregor’s comments now seem even more relevant than when he first made them.
