Martin O’Neill has found himself under mounting pressure at Celtic following consecutive defeats against Rangers and Benfica, with questions surrounding the manager’s future dominating discussions around Parkhead.

The defeat in the Old Firm derby was a painful setback for the Hoops, but their subsequent 4-1 loss to Benfica in the Europa League only intensified the scrutiny. Celtic were struggling for consistency, and the debate over whether O’Neill could turn things around became increasingly difficult to ignore.

The manager’s own comments during the international break added further fuel to the speculation after he admitted he would reflect on his position. Several pundits discussed the possibility of his departure, leaving Celtic supporters wondering whether another managerial change could be on the horizon.

O’Neill eventually remained in charge, but the pressure has not disappeared. With Celtic needing to rebuild confidence and deliver results, every fixture has taken on greater significance for the experienced manager.

Sunday’s meeting with Hearts, however, provided a much-needed response. Celtic produced a stunning 7-1 victory, with Callum Osmand scoring twice on his first professional start and Benjamin Nygren also registering a brace.

The emphatic result offered O’Neill some breathing space after the disappointment of the previous weeks, although the manager will know that one convincing performance cannot erase the concerns raised by the defeats against Rangers and Benfica.

While Celtic supporters will hope the Hearts victory marks the beginning of a turnaround, another football story has emerged involving a former Hoops striker whose first major opportunity in management has ended in disappointment.

Former Celtic striker Colin Kazim-Richards sacked

Colin Kazim-Richards has been sacked as Crawley Town head coach just seven months into his first senior managerial job, following a difficult start to the League Two season.

The decision was announced after Tuesday’s 3-2 home defeat to Shrewsbury Town, which added to a disappointing run of results for the club.

Crawley have lost seven of their opening ten league matches, leaving the club struggling to find momentum despite significant changes to the squad during the summer.

Kazim-Richards was not the only departure, with assistant Julian Gray and director of football Erdem Konyar also leaving the club.

The announcement brings an abrupt end to a managerial spell that had initially started with an important achievement.

From saving Crawley to losing his job:

Kazim-Richards was appointed in March while Crawley were fighting to preserve their Football League status.

The former Turkey international helped the club secure survival on the final day of the season, an achievement that earned him the permanent position in May.

There was then a substantial summer rebuild, with 16 players arriving as Crawley attempted to improve their prospects ahead of the new campaign.

However, results have failed to meet expectations. Seven defeats in ten league games left the club under growing pressure, and the loss to Shrewsbury proved to be the final match of Kazim-Richards’ tenure.

His dismissal represents a major setback for a manager who had only recently secured his first permanent opportunity in senior football management.

Celtic fans will remember his brief Parkhead spell

Celtic supporters may remember Kazim-Richards from his time at Parkhead in 2016, when he played under former manager Ronny Deila.

The striker made 13 appearances for the Hoops, scoring twice before leaving for Brazilian side Coritiba that summer.

His spell in Glasgow was relatively brief, but his latest career development will be of interest to supporters who remember his involvement with the club.

Since moving into coaching and management, Kazim-Richards had been working towards establishing himself in a new role within the game. Helping Crawley avoid relegation appeared to provide a promising foundation, but the demands of the following campaign proved considerably more difficult.

He must now look for another opportunity to continue his managerial career.

Former Hoops striker raised concerns about opportunities for black managers

Kazim-Richards’ departure also comes shortly after he spoke about the barriers facing black coaches seeking opportunities in senior football.

Asked by The Guardian whether a glass ceiling remained in the game, he replied: “Is there still a glass ceiling? Of course.”

He argued that capable black coaches working in academies and non-league football deserved opportunities to progress into senior management.

His appointment at Crawley represented an opportunity to demonstrate what he could achieve in charge of a senior team. Although he initially helped secure the club’s survival, the disappointing start to the new season has now brought that opportunity to an early end.

Crawley will need to appoint a successor and attempt to stabilise their campaign, while Kazim-Richards faces the challenge of rebuilding his reputation as a manager.

For Celtic, meanwhile, the immediate focus remains on whether O’Neill can use the emphatic victory over Hearts as a turning point following the setbacks against Rangers and Benfica.

The two situations are very different, but both underline the unforgiving nature of football management, where previous achievements can quickly be overshadowed when results begin to deteriorate.
