Roy Keane criticize £61k per week player over his rubbish shambolic performance vs Man United

Roy Keane has once again delivered a withering verdict on Premier League standards after taking aim at Leeds United left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson for a performance he described as “rubbish” and “shambolic” against Manchester United.

The former United captain did not hold back when reflecting on the Sweden international’s contribution in the 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday.

Gudmundsson, who earns a reported £61,000 a week at Leeds, produced a display that left Keane seething and provided the outspoken pundit with fresh evidence for his long-running complaints about modern footballers failing to match their wages with consistent quality.

The numbers make for particularly grim reading. Gudmundsson won zero aerial duels throughout the contest, managed just a solitary tackle, and lost possession on 14 separate occasions.

He won only two of his six ground duels and, most damningly for a player operating as a left-sided defender or wing-back, completed none of his six attempted crosses.

To compound the misery, he was extremely fortunate to escape a red card after a bizarre and poorly timed tackle on Manchester United midfielder Andrey Santos that drew gasps around the ground and left the Brazilian on the floor.

Keane has never been one to soft-pedal his opinions, and this latest outburst fits neatly into his established pattern of calling out players he believes are overpaid and underperforming.

The Irishman has repeatedly argued that the huge salaries now commonplace in the Premier League should come with a non-negotiable expectation of intensity, basic competence and accountability. In Gudmundsson’s case, Keane saw little evidence of any of those qualities.

The game itself was a typically intense Yorkshire derby. Manchester United took the lead in the first half through Bryan Mbeumo, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to equalise early in the second period.

Leeds controlled large spells of possession and created the better chances after the break, yet United will feel they did enough to restrict the home side’s wide players.

Gudmundsson was one of those wide options expected to provide an outlet and deliver quality into the box. Instead, his crossing was wayward, his defensive contributions minimal, and his overall influence negligible.

For a player signed from Lille with a solid reputation as an energetic, attack-minded full-back, the afternoon represented a clear off-day. Supporters on both sides noticed the lack of impact, and social media quickly filled with criticism of the Swede’s display. Keane simply put that widespread frustration into characteristically blunt language.

The United legend has often reserved his strongest words for players he believes are not living up to the standards required at the highest level.

Whether it is questioning work rate, technical execution or decision-making, Keane rarely misses an opportunity to highlight what he sees as a soft underbelly in the modern game. Gudmundsson’s combination of poor attacking output, limited defensive numbers and a near-sending-off offered the perfect case study.

Manchester United themselves remain in a difficult period under Michael Carrick, still searching for consistency and yet to find a winning formula this season.

The point at Elland Road extended their winless run and did little to ease the pressure. Yet for once the spotlight was not solely on the visiting side. Gudmundsson’s anonymous showing ensured that at least one Leeds player would face the full force of Keane’s disapproval.

At £61,000 a week, the expectation is that a Premier League defender delivers reliable crosses, wins his fair share of duels and avoids needless risks that could leave his team short-handed.

Gudmundsson managed none of those things on Sunday. Keane made it clear he expects far better — and in doing so reminded everyone that, in his eyes, the gap between salary and performance remains far too wide for comfort.
