Chaos behind the scenes at Old Trafford as key Man Utd star launches a blistering attack on the club, drops Bombshell EXIT demand straight to Michael Carrick just 24 hours before the crunch showdown with Leeds

Manchester United could be heading towards another major defensive shake-up, with fresh reports suggesting one of their senior stars has made his intentions clear to the club’s hierarchy.

The development threatens to create another headache for Michael Carrick at a time when United are already dealing with growing scrutiny following their disappointing European performance.

The Red Devils travel to Elland Road on Sunday to face fierce rivals Leeds United, knowing that anything less than a convincing response could intensify the pressure surrounding the team.

Yet, while Carrick is determined to keep the focus on the immediate challenge, questions about the club’s dressing room and long-term recruitment plans continue to gather momentum.

The situation has become increasingly uncomfortable following the controversy surrounding Lisandro Martinez and his criticism of the club’s hierarchy after the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Now, reports have added another significant twist to the defender’s future at Old Trafford.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Martinez has informed INEOS that he does not want the club to activate the option to extend his contract by another 12 months when his current agreement expires next summer.

The report suggests the Argentina international intends to leave Manchester United, potentially forcing Jason Wilcox and the recruitment department to accelerate their search for a replacement.

The development comes at a difficult moment for United, with Martinez’s recent public comments already attracting criticism from former players and raising questions about the relationship between the squad and the club’s leadership.

Wayne Rooney warned that the defender could “rip the dressing room apart”, while Jamie Carragher argued that “he overstepped the mark”.

Carrick, however, has attempted to shut down suggestions that the controversy has destabilised his squad, insisting that outside criticism does not necessarily reflect what is happening inside the club.

“There’s a lot of people who say a lot of things – ex-pros or not ex-pros – it doesn’t necessarily mean they understand what is going on here,” he said.

“Just because people talk on the outside doesn’t mean that is the truth. I am telling you the truth. The squad today was in a fantastic place, better than I have seen it for a while. That is it, plain and simple. We are living it every day and know what it feels like.

“We are emotional and care a lot. Sometimes someone says something that maybe you shouldn’t say at that certain time, but it doesn’t distract us from what we are creating here and the environment and spirit within the group. It [the squad] is not affected, I am telling you.”

Carrick also confirmed that Martinez would be included in the squad travelling to Leeds, meaning the defender remains available for Sunday’s fiercely contested encounter despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The United manager has made it clear that he expects a demanding afternoon against Daniel Farke’s side, who have impressed with their performances this season.

“[I’m expecting] a very tough game,” Carrick said.

“I think Daniel’s done a really good job, I have to say, for a long period of time. They had a sticky start in there, but since they changed things a little bit at the start last season, they’ve gone really consistent. A dangerous team, played really well at Arsenal again last week and maybe a bit unlucky not to take anything from the game.

“It’s a special game, going to Elland Road. It’s one definitely to look forward to, it’s where it brings everything out in you. All the senses are alive, the noise, the atmosphere, the intensity, everything’s there, so we look forward to it.”

While the Leeds fixture remains the immediate priority, United’s reported succession planning has already placed another Premier League defender firmly in the spotlight.

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Martinez, with Wilcox and the recruitment team reportedly monitoring left-footed central defenders ahead of a possible departure.

Branthwaite is not a new name on United’s radar. The England international has previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and his age, Premier League experience and ability to operate on the left side of central defence make him an attractive option.

However, securing his signature would be far from straightforward. Everton would have little incentive to part with an important defender cheaply, meaning United could face a difficult negotiation if they decide to turn their interest into a formal approach.

The club also have other defensive priorities to consider, including the need for a specialist left-back, placing additional pressure on Wilcox to decide how best to allocate the recruitment budget.

Martinez’s injury history could also factor into United’s thinking. The 28-year-old has endured frustrating spells on the sidelines in recent seasons, creating concerns about his long-term availability even before the latest reports surrounding his contract intentions.

For now, there is no confirmed transfer agreement, and Branthwaite’s potential arrival remains a reported possibility rather than a completed deal.

Nevertheless, if Martinez’s reported stance remains unchanged, United may have to prepare for life without a defender who has been an important part of their plans when fit.

Carrick will want the speculation kept away from his players as United prepare for a hostile reception at Elland Road. But with the club’s immediate results under scrutiny and questions surrounding Martinez’s future, the coming months could prove decisive for both the defender and United’s recruitment strategy.
