Leeds United have a golden opportunity to make a statement against their bitter rivals, with Elland Road expected to be rocking when Manchester United arrive for Sunday’s Premier League showdown.
The Whites have made an encouraging start to the campaign, while their visitors are under mounting pressure to deliver a result.
With the two clubs heading into the contest in contrasting circumstances, many will fancy Daniel Farke’s men to take advantage of home support and Manchester United’s recent struggles. The atmosphere could become a major factor if Leeds make another fast start, particularly with the visitors desperate to avoid a damaging result.
Former England striker Alan Shearer has already explained why he expects the home side to come out on top. However, one Manchester United legend has offered a very different verdict — and his prediction could leave Leeds supporters wondering whether he has underestimated what awaits his former club at Elland Road.
Gary Neville has backed Manchester United to secure all three points, predicting a 2-1 victory for Michael Carrick’s side despite their difficult run of form.
The former United captain’s confidence contrasts sharply with Shearer’s assessment of the fixture, with the Newcastle United legend believing Leeds have the momentum and belief to punish their struggling opponents.
Shearer expects the home crowd to play a major role in Sunday’s encounter and believes the pressure surrounding Manchester United could work directly in Leeds’ favour.
“Elland Road will be absolutely bouncing. They’re up against it, Man United and they’re up against this Leeds team who are going to make it very difficult,” Shearer told The Metro.
The former striker was particularly impressed by Leeds’ performance against Arsenal last week, despite their eventual defeat. In his view, the Whites demonstrated enough quality to suggest they can trouble Manchester United, especially if they reproduce that level of performance in front of their own supporters.
“They were brilliant at Arsenal last week. I’ve got no faith or confidence in Man United. So, I’m going to say a home win. I think Leeds will beat them.
“Leeds went 1-0 up against Arsenal and they missed a couple of chances before that, so they deservedly took the lead. It was only then when Arsenal made the changes that they lost the game.
“So, I think Leeds will go into this with more belief and confidence, and they’ll know the pressure that Man United are under. I think they’ll feed off that, so that’s why I’m going to go for a home win.”
Shearer’s argument is built around Leeds’ recent performances and the psychological advantage they could enjoy against a side struggling to meet expectations. The pressure on Manchester United could become even more intense if they concede early or allow the home crowd to grow in confidence.
There is also the question of Carrick’s position and whether his players can deliver the response required in such a hostile environment.
Shearer believes the squad remains behind the manager, pointing to their reaction in Madrid on Tuesday night and comments from Lisandro Martinez as evidence that the players continue to support Carrick.
However, he warned that positive signs will count for little unless Manchester United start collecting results.
“I think Man United players are still playing for Michael Carrick. I think their reaction in Madrid on Tuesday night and also Martinez’s comments backed up that the players like Michael Carrick, but they’ve got to go out and get a result for him desperately because the pressure will be hugely on if Leeds beat them.
“Unfortunately for Michael, I think Leeds will win this weekend.”
Neville, though, has refused to follow that line of thinking.
The former Manchester United defender has instead backed his old club to leave Elland Road with victory, predicting a 2-1 result that would provide a significant boost amid the scrutiny surrounding Carrick and his team.
“I am going 2-1 Man United,” Neville said on The Overlap.
His reasoning centred on the attacking options he believes Manchester United can call upon, suggesting their individual quality could make the difference even in a difficult away fixture.
“To be honest, if you have Cunha, Mbuemo, Amad and Rashford, [you have a chance].”
That prediction is likely to divide supporters, particularly those who believe Manchester United have not shown enough consistency to justify such confidence. For Leeds fans, Neville’s backing of the visitors offers another talking point ahead of a fixture where bragging rights are at stake.
However, his forecast is not necessarily a claim that Manchester United have been the better team this season. Rather, he appears to believe their attacking personnel give them the tools to exploit Leeds and take control of the contest.
The crucial question is whether those players can deliver when the pressure is at its highest.
Leeds have shown they can compete with top opposition, and the prospect of facing their bitter rivals at a packed Elland Road should provide additional motivation. Manchester United, meanwhile, cannot afford another disappointing result if they are to ease the pressure surrounding their manager.
Shearer sees a home win. Neville expects an away victory.
Sunday’s showdown will determine which former Premier League star has read the situation correctly — and whether Manchester United can silence Elland Road or leave with another painful result.
