Ally McCoist believes Steven Gerrard could make a return to Rangers should they decide to part ways with Danny Rohl.

However, the Ibrox icon also feels supporters may be calling for another figure with strong Light Blues ties to step into the role – Derek McInnes.

German coach Rohl only replaced Russell Martin back in October but is already under pressure from sections of the fanbase for his exit following Rangers’ underwhelming finish to the campaign.

The former Sheffield Wednesday manager had initially reignited the club’s title challenge with an impressive spell after arriving, but four straight defeats – Rangers’ worst run since 1983 – have seen them drop to third in the Premiership table, 11 points behind leaders Hearts heading into Saturday’s final round of fixtures.

Liverpool legend Gerrard turned down the opportunity to return for a second spell at Ibrox after discussions with Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers executives before Rohl’s appointment. After 16 months out of management, he has since been linked with several English Championship sides.

And McCoist can picture the Englishman making a comeback to Ibrox this summer if Rohl is relieved of his duties. Speaking to talkSPORT Bet, he said: “I could [see Steven Gerrard returning], yes.

“To be honest, a lot of people will be screaming for Derek McInnes as well, understandably. I’m not sure Derek would return to Rangers now, to be honest. He’s probably enjoying the project at Hearts.

“Although they’re having a fantastic season, they don’t look as though they’re going to get away next year. They look as though they’re going to build and attempt to keep moving forward and progress.

“So he would be another one who would come out of the equation. But Steven Gerrard would obviously tick a lot of boxes with a lot of the Rangers fans.”

McCoist has also expressed his disappointment over the situation that led to James Tavernier being denied a farewell at Ibrox after 11 years at Rangers following a confrontation with boss Rohl.

“I know it’s a shame, because I’ll tell you where I am with it”, he added. “The way the break has unfolded for Rangers, that’s more of a concern than what’s happened with James Tavernier.

“In my opinion, James Tavernier 100% deserves an opportunity to thank the fans on the pitch.

“He should definitely have been given the opportunity to say thank you to the fans.

“Now I don’t know the ins and outs of injuries or fallouts between managers and players but I just think the fans should have had the opportunity to thank him for his service and for him to thank the fans for their support for all those years.”
