NafisaBarry Ferguson has given his opinion on growing calls from sections of the Rangers support demanding Danny Rohl be sacked.
The Ibrox boss has faced mounting criticism over recent weeks following a damaging run of three straight defeats during the split phase of the season.
For many supporters, the final straw arrived with the painful 3-1 loss to Celtic at Parkhead last weekend.
After investing close to £40 million this season in an effort to challenge properly at the top end of the table, Rangers are still set to end the campaign down in third place.
A large section of the fanbase now believe that alone should be enough to bring Rohl’s spell in charge to an end.
Ferguson, however, feels the German coach will still be in the dugout next season.
The former Rangers captain and interim manager suggested that Rohl already appears to be preparing for the next campaign, which he believes points towards backing from the board behind the scenes.
Ferguson said on Go Radio: “I listened to his presser before the Celtic game and he was looking ahead to next season and where he wants to strengthen.
“So I don’t see a reason why he wouldn’t be there.
“I know there’s been talk about Wolfsburg being interested but we just need to wait and see over the next week or so.
“Certainly he’s going to come under a bit of criticism and pressure with three bad defeats.
“I said a few weeks ago I was pretty confident Rangers would be in with a good shout but they’ve not been able to handle the situation very well.”
Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Group now face a major decision heading into the summer after a season where Rohl has clearly fallen below expectations.
The manager himself appears fully aware of the scrutiny surrounding his position and addressed the situation directly after Sunday’s defeat at Celtic Park.
Rohl said: “In general I think in football, especially in places where you want to be the best and want to win titles, no defeat helps, of course.
“It goes quick in football, this is sometimes also part of the story.
“I had, until now, a lot of great moments with the club, and I’m convinced that I will have more of these great moments in the future.
“I’ve never underrated this job here. It’s a huge club, an ambitious club, there’s a lot of power.
“But this is general, when you work for a big club you have great moments.
“Three weeks ago we were confident, enjoyable, looking forward to the split, and after three weeks you come to a point where you’re disappointed, really disappointed.
“You look to the game-backs and you see a mistake, which we repeat and repeat, and I have the self-confidence to go forward and lead this group, to lead the club in the future, and to bring titles.”
The pressure around Rohl has intensified dramatically following Rangers’ collapse during the closing stretch of the campaign.
Only a few weeks ago, there was genuine belief that Rangers could still mount a serious title challenge. Instead, poor performances and costly mistakes have completely derailed their season at the worst possible moment.
Defeat against Celtic effectively ended any lingering hopes of silverware and confirmed that Champions League football will also be out of reach next season.
Despite that, Rohl continues to publicly project confidence that he remains the right man to rebuild the squad and bring success back to Ibrox.
Whether the Rangers hierarchy share that same confidence is now one of the biggest talking points heading into the summer.
