NafisaRangers’ new era under Derek McInnes did not quite begin the way supporters had imagined, and while the debate after the 1-1 draw with Dundee United largely centred on the late penalty controversy, another performance quietly came under increasing scrutiny.
The Light Blues travelled to Tannadice hoping to kick off their Premiership campaign with three points, but instead had to settle for a frustrating draw after Thelo Aasgaard’s stunning second-half strike cancelled out Lachlan Rose’s opener.
There were encouraging signs from some of Rangers’ new arrivals, but several players failed to convince as Dundee United repeatedly found joy attacking the visitors.
With James Tavernier no longer at the club and competition for places expected to intensify before the transfer window closes, every performance is now under the microscope.
One Rangers player, in particular, has found himself at the centre of criticism following the opening-day display.
Former Ibrox midfielder Andy Halliday did not hide his disappointment when assessing the performance of Dujon Sterling, insisting the defender endured a difficult evening against Jim Goodwin’s side.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland during the match, Halliday said:
“It’s got to be said Dujon Sterling has had such a poor opening 60 minutes.”
Sterling played the full 90 minutes at right-back but struggled to contain Dundee United’s attacking threat for large spells of the contest.
The performance will inevitably raise fresh questions for Derek McInnes, who is still shaping his squad ahead of a demanding campaign in both domestic and European competition.
Sterling, now 26, was expected to play a much bigger role following the departure of James Tavernier, but injuries have already disrupted his Rangers career, with an Achilles problem ruling him out for a significant spell last season.
His latest display is unlikely to ease concerns among supporters, particularly with Rangers continuing to assess defensive reinforcements before the transfer deadline.
The club have already been linked with Hammarby full-back Hampus Skoglund, while former Rangers academy graduate Nathan Patterson has also been tipped for a sensational return to Ibrox.
Ross McCrorie is another player capable of operating on the right side of defence, giving McInnes additional competition if Sterling’s performances fail to improve.
Rangers are also prioritising attacking reinforcements.
The Light Blues continue to monitor former Celtic target Fares Ghedjemis as they search for greater creativity out wide, although hopes of landing Tottenham youngster Mikey Moore appear to have suffered a setback after reports suggested the winger is waiting for an opportunity in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
With Rangers preparing for a crucial Europa League qualifier and another busy run of fixtures, McInnes will be hoping several of his players respond quickly after an opening performance that fell well below the standards expected at Ibrox.
