NafisaRangers supporters have spent much of the summer waiting for signs that Derek McInnes and the club’s recruitment team are ready to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.
With expectations rising around Ibrox, every transfer development has been closely monitored as the Light Blues look to strengthen key areas of the pitch.
The arrival of McInnes has already sparked excitement among the fanbase, with the new boss determined to put his own stamp on the squad. McCrorie, who has represented Scotland on the international stage and featured during World Cup qualification campaigns, originally left Rangers in 2021 when Aberdeen made his loan move permanent following an obligatory purchase clause.
The defender has since developed further during his spell in England with Bristol City, where he featured in a variety of positions across the backline and midfield. His ability to operate in multiple roles is believed to be one of the key reasons Rangers were eager to bring him back.
Perhaps the most significant factor behind the move is his relationship with Derek McInnes. The Rangers boss previously worked closely with McCrorie during their time together at Aberdeen and knows exactly what the Scotland international can bring to the squad.
While many expect McCrorie to feature primarily at right-back, his versatility gives McInnes plenty of options. Throughout his career, he has accumulated significant experience as a defensive midfielder and centre-back, while also operating as a wing-back and wide midfielder when required.
During their previous spell together, McInnes regularly trusted McCrorie in central areas of the pitch. The midfielder made numerous appearances in defensive midfield under the current Rangers manager, highlighting the tactical flexibility he could provide once again.
His return could therefore solve several issues for Rangers at once. Rather than signing multiple players for different positions, the club are bringing in someone capable of filling a variety of roles depending on injuries, suspensions or tactical requirements.
The move also represents a homecoming for a player who came through Rangers’ academy system and understands the demands of playing at Ibrox.
With pre-season preparations gathering pace and McInnes continuing to shape his squad, McCrorie’s return could prove to be one of the smartest pieces of business completed by Rangers this summer.
