While supporters have understandably focused on new arrivals and transfer speculation, significant work has also been taking place behind the scenes as the club prepares for a fresh era under Derek McInnes.
Building a successful team is not only about recruiting players. Coaching staff play an equally important role, particularly when it comes to developing individuals, maintaining standards on the training ground and ensuring consistency throughout a long season.
Clubs competing for domestic honours often place just as much emphasis on strengthening their backroom teams as they do on signing footballers.
With that in mind, Rangers have now confirmed the return of one of the club’s most iconic modern figures.
The Light Blues have officially announced that Allan McGregor is back at Ibrox after being appointed as the club’s new lead goalkeeping coach.
The legendary former goalkeeper enjoyed two memorable spells with Rangers, establishing himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the club’s history. He also briefly worked on the coaching staff during Barry Ferguson’s interim spell in charge towards the end of the 2024/25 season.
McGregor now returns permanently to the coaching setup under new manager Derek McInnes, replacing Sal Bibbo, who recently departed to join Coventry City.
Confirming the appointment, Rangers released the following statement:

The appointment represents another significant piece of McInnes’ backroom rebuild as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
The coaching structure at Ibrox has undergone major alterations in recent months, with McInnes replacing Danny Rohl as head coach following another summer of change at the club.
The former Hearts manager has brought trusted assistants Paul Sheerin and Alan Archibald with him, while Craig Clark also made the move from Kilmarnock to strengthen the coaching department.
Elsewhere, Rangers have also seen notable departures from the backroom team. Highly-rated set-piece specialist Scott Fry, who made a positive impact last season, has left for Birmingham City, while Bibbo has also returned to English football following his move to Coventry.
McGregor’s return is expected to be warmly welcomed by the Rangers support, with the Hall of Fame goalkeeper now tasked with helping develop the club’s goalkeepers and passing on the experience gained during a distinguished playing career that saw him become one of the greatest custodians ever to wear the famous blue jersey.
