The Scottish champions have earned widespread praise for producing exciting prospects over the years, with several academy graduates progressing into senior football or attracting attention from elite clubs across Europe.
However, as the financial gap between Scotland and the Premier League continues to widen, retaining those youngsters has become an increasingly difficult task.
Liverpool, in particular, have made a habit of identifying some of Britain’s most promising teenage players long before they become household names. The Reds continue to invest heavily in youth recruitment, believing today’s academy signings could become tomorrow’s first-team stars.
That long-term strategy has now seen another Celtic youngster swap Glasgow for Merseyside.
Scotland Under-16 captain Dara Jikiemi has officially left Celtic to complete his move to Liverpool after deciding against extending his stay at Parkhead.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, revealing that all paperwork had been signed on Sunday.
He posted:
“🚨🏴 Liverpool have sealed deal to sign Scotland U16 captain Dara Jikiemi from Celtic, here we go!
Jikiemi has signed paperwork on Sunday to join #LFC on a 5 year contract. 🔴🤝🏿”
The highly-rated defender has agreed a five-year contract with Liverpool after opting to continue his development at Anfield rather than commit his future to Celtic.
Jikiemi had established himself as one of the standout prospects within Celtic’s academy, earning recognition not only through his performances at club level but also by captaining Scotland’s Under-16 national team.
Reports indicate Liverpool had been monitoring the youngster for several months before accelerating negotiations this summer. Their long-term development plan ultimately proved convincing enough for the teenager to reject the opportunity to remain at Parkhead.
While Celtic were keen to retain one of their brightest academy products by offering improved terms, Liverpool’s proposal and pathway into one of England’s elite academy systems persuaded Jikiemi to make the switch.
Although the move does not involve a significant transfer fee because of the player’s age, Celtic will receive training compensation under FIFA regulations.
For Liverpool, the signing represents another important investment in the future as the club continues strengthening its academy with some of Britain’s top emerging talents.
For Celtic supporters, meanwhile, Jikiemi’s departure is another disappointing academy exit, with the defender now beginning the next chapter of his career in the Premier League after saying goodbye to the Scottish champions.
