Football Insider explained on its latest Transfer Insider podcast that Rangers are not actively looking to move Aasgaard on, but they have also not completely closed the door on a possible exit.
The club remain under no financial pressure to sell, though the opportunity to secure a significant return for a player who experienced an inconsistent first campaign in Glasgow could become an attractive proposition if the right bid arrives.
If no suitable proposal materialises, Rangers are more than comfortable heading into the season with Aasgaard remaining part of McInnes’ midfield plans.
Could Rangers reconsider their position on Thelo Aasgaard?
Football Insider previously reported back in May that Rangers were not planning to offload Aasgaard despite suggestions the club could cut their losses.
The midfielder arrived from Luton Town last summer in a deal valued at around £3.5million, and there had been speculation Rangers might simply look to recover that investment.
However, while an exit is still viewed as unlikely, the club’s stance could soften should another side submit an offer comfortably exceeding what Rangers originally paid.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, the outlet explained:
“He had a bit of an inconsistent first season up at Rangers, there’s no getting away from that.
“He scored eight goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, and obviously there was a lot of change at Rangers last year with Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.
“Rangers won’t be rushing him out of the exit door, but every player has his price, and if a big offer was to arrive for Aasgaard, I’m sure it’s something they would have to listen to.
“But he’s under contract until 2029, and Rangers aren’t under any pressure to sell Thelo Aasgaard as things stand.”
What is Aasgaard’s stance on leaving Rangers?
While outside interest continues to gather pace, the player’s own intentions could ultimately prove decisive.
After a challenging debut campaign in Scotland, where he found consistency difficult to achieve, there has naturally been debate over whether he can become a long-term fixture in Rangers’ midfield.
Despite that, Football Insider reported on 3 July that Aasgaard has no desire to leave Ibrox and instead wants to silence his critics by proving his worth.
The midfielder is determined to impress McInnes throughout pre-season and establish himself as an important figure in the manager’s plans going forward.
Having now gained valuable experience in the Scottish Premiership, Aasgaard believes he is capable of producing far stronger performances and is eager to show significant progress throughout the 2026/27 campaign rather than seeking a move elsewhere.
