Following the arrivals of Lawrence Shankland and Ross McCrorie, there has been growing anticipation over who would be next through the doors. Rangers’ recruitment team has focused on bringing in players with top-level experience, leadership qualities and the ability to make an immediate impact.
That patience has now been rewarded after another major addition was officially confirmed by the club.
Rangers have officially completed the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Dan Neil, with the club unveiling their newest arrival after he agreed a three-year contract at Ibrox.
The deal marks another statement of intent from McInnes, who has continued reshaping his squad throughout the summer as preparations intensify for the 2026/27 season.
The new Rangers midfielder has also selected the No. 6 jersey, with the club revealing his squad number during his official unveiling after finalising the transfer.
Neil arrives after leaving Sunderland following a successful loan spell at Ipswich Town, where he helped the club earn promotion. Before Rangers secured his signature, there had been widespread reports linking the midfielder with several Premier League clubs.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs previously revealed that West Ham United, Rangers and Hull City were all exploring a move for the talented free agent.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie later added that Southampton had entered advanced negotiations for the midfielder, reporting:
“Southampton are in advanced talks with midfielder Dan Neil. The free agent midfielder is high on Tonda Eckert’s wish list, and is close to signing. There’s also interest in the 24-year-old from Wolves & West Ham, who has his pick of top Championship clubs.”
Despite the intense competition, Rangers ultimately won the race, convincing the midfielder that Ibrox was the right destination for the next stage of his career.
Speaking after the transfer became official, Neil said:
“It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers. I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring.
“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”
McInnes was equally delighted to welcome his latest recruit, saying:
“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He will be an excellent addition to our squad. He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.
“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025. I’m really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”
Neil becomes the latest name added to Rangers’ growing list of summer arrivals, joining Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur as McInnes continues building a squad capable of competing for major honours.
With his move now officially complete and the famous No. 6 shirt secured, Rangers supporters will be hoping the midfielder can quickly establish himself as another key figure in the club’s new era under McInnes.
