NafisaLeeds United are edging closer to another important piece of summer transfer business, with Nico Elvedi emerging as a serious target for Daniel Farke as the Whites look to strengthen their defence ahead of another Premier League campaign.
The Switzerland international has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Leeds over a contract that would run until 2029. Attention can now turn to negotiations between the two clubs, with Borussia Mönchengladbach understood to be open to selling the experienced defender if their valuation is met.
For Leeds, the potential arrival of Elvedi would represent another statement of intent during a summer in which the club have already shown a willingness to invest heavily in the squad.
The Whites have moved quickly to strengthen key areas, bringing in Harry Wilson on a free transfer before spending £34million on Tarik Muharemovic. They then broke their club transfer record to bring goalkeeper James Trafford back to Yorkshire from Manchester City.
Now, Farke appears keen to add further quality at the heart of his defence.
Nico Elvedi deal fits Leeds United plan
Elvedi’s profile makes considerable sense for Leeds.
The 29-year-old has spent the vast majority of his career playing at the highest level in German football and has accumulated enormous experience during his decade at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
He is comfortable in a back four but can also operate in a three-man defensive system, giving Farke another option as he continues to develop Leeds’ tactical approach.
That versatility could prove particularly valuable given the German manager’s preference for adapting his shape depending on the opposition.
Leeds have already experienced change at the back this summer, while the potential departure of Sebastiaan Bornauw has created another reason for Farke to seek additional defensive cover.
Elvedi would offer considerably more than simply another body in the squad. His experience, composure and ability to read the game could provide Leeds with another dependable option as they attempt to make life considerably more comfortable in the Premier League.
The Whites finished 14th last season and achieved their primary objective of avoiding relegation, but there is now an obvious desire to build on that platform rather than simply repeat the same battle for survival.
A player of Elvedi’s experience would fit that ambition.
Daniel Farke connection could prove decisive
Perhaps the most intriguing part of Leeds’ interest is the relationship between Elvedi and Farke.
The Leeds boss already knows the defender from their time together in Germany, having worked with him during Farke’s spell in charge of Mönchengladbach.
That familiarity could be hugely beneficial.
Farke knows exactly what Elvedi can offer, how he operates tactically and whether he possesses the characteristics required to fit into his system.
It also means this is unlikely to be a case of Leeds simply identifying an experienced Bundesliga defender and hoping he adapts.
Farke has already seen the player at close quarters.
The reported agreement on personal terms therefore represents an encouraging development for Leeds, although the clubs still need to reach an agreement before the transfer can be completed.
Mönchengladbach are understood to be prepared to consider a sale under the right circumstances, while Elvedi is reportedly keen on the opportunity to test himself in English football.
That leaves the club-to-club negotiations as the major hurdle.
If Leeds can find common ground with Mönchengladbach, Elvedi could become another important addition to Farke’s squad.
Leeds United showing serious ambition
There is an increasingly clear pattern to Leeds’ recruitment this summer.
The club are not simply trying to assemble enough players to survive another season in the Premier League. They are attempting to raise the overall standard of the squad.

Elvedi fits that description.
There is still work to be done before the Swiss defender can be officially presented as a Leeds player, but the reported agreement on personal terms puts the Whites in a strong position.
For Farke, the prospect of adding a player he already knows and trusts will surely be appealing.
