While much of the attention has centred on potential arrivals and Daniel Farke’s plans to strengthen key positions, Leeds United have also faced important decisions regarding the future of several established members of the squad.
The club’s hierarchy have made it clear that they want to build a side capable of competing consistently at the highest level, but achieving that ambition sometimes means making difficult calls on long-serving players whose situations have reached a crossroads.
Behind the scenes, discussions have been ongoing for weeks as Leeds balanced contract situations, incoming transfer targets and the long-term structure of Farke’s squad. With interest from Premier League rivals continuing to grow, it had become increasingly difficult to ignore the uncertainty surrounding one of the club’s most experienced defenders.
That uncertainty has now reached its conclusion.
Leeds United have verbally agreed a £20 million deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for the transfer of Pascal Struijk.
The agreement between the two clubs was reached on Saturday, with Brighton now expected to submit the formal paperwork to complete the move.
Multiple sources familiar with the negotiations have confirmed that the fee settled between the two sides stands at £20m.
Struijk’s contract at Elland Road was due to run until June 2027, meaning Leeds faced the prospect of seeing the Dutch defender enter the final year of his deal and potentially leave for nothing if no transfer or extension was agreed this summer.
His departure brings the curtain down on an impressive eight-and-a-half-year spell in West Yorkshire.
After arriving from Ajax’s academy system, the 26-year-old developed into one of Leeds’ most dependable defenders, making 196 appearances across all competitions.
During that period, Struijk played an important role in two memorable Championship-winning campaigns, helping Leeds secure promotion in both 2019/20 and 2024/25.
Brighton had stepped up their search for defensive reinforcements following the sale of Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month for a reported £52 million.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side had also explored a move for Luka Vušković, who is currently away representing Croatia at the World Cup, but have now accelerated negotiations for Struijk instead.
Although Leeds were determined to keep the centre-back, club officials were ultimately unable to convince him to commit his long-term future.
The Whites had presented Struijk with a fresh contract proposal that would have seen him remain at Elland Road throughout what should be the prime years of his career.
However, people close to the player indicated that he felt the time had come to embrace a fresh challenge elsewhere.
His exit now creates a significant vacancy in Daniel Farke’s defensive options.
Struijk was the club’s only naturally left-footed senior central defender, meaning Leeds will almost certainly enter the transfer market in search of a replacement capable of filling that specific role.
The timing of the deal also arrives during an increasingly active transfer period for Leeds.
Illan Meslier remains the only other confirmed senior departure this summer, while reports earlier this week suggested that Harry Wilson has already agreed personal terms ahead of his anticipated arrival once his contract officially begins on July 1.
With Struijk now seemingly heading for the Amex Stadium, Leeds’ recruitment team are expected to intensify efforts to identify another left-sided central defender as Farke continues reshaping his squad before the new Premier League season gets underway.
