After an encouraging start to the summer transfer window, supporters are beginning to sense that the club’s hierarchy is determined to provide the new manager with a squad capable of challenging at the very top once again.
The early business has already strengthened key positions, but there is still a widespread feeling that further additions are necessary, particularly at the back. With several departures creating gaps in the defensive unit, Rangers have continued exploring opportunities across Europe in search of experienced reinforcements.
One approach that appears to be gathering momentum is the club’s willingness to target players looking to revive their careers. Rather than focusing solely on established stars, the Light Blues seem keen to identify footballers who still possess significant quality but simply need the right environment to rediscover their best form.
That strategy could now lead Rangers to another intriguing addition from Serie A.
According to reports from Sky Sport Italia and the Daily Record, Atalanta are preparing to send defender Ben Godfrey to Rangers on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent at the conclusion of the campaign.
The English centre-back has endured a frustrating period since completing his €12.5 million transfer from Everton in 2024.
Once regarded as one of England’s brightest defensive prospects, Godfrey even earned two senior international appearances for the Three Lions back in 2021. However, his career has stalled considerably over the last few seasons.
His move to Bergamo failed to produce the fresh start many expected.
Despite Atalanta investing heavily to secure his signature, the defender struggled to establish himself and eventually found himself heading out on a series of temporary moves.
Loan spells followed with Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and, most recently, Danish outfit Brondby, where he spent the second half of last season.
Now, another fresh opportunity appears to be on the horizon.
The latest reports suggest Rangers are on the verge of completing a loan agreement that would also include an option to purchase the 28-year-old on a permanent basis next summer if he impresses during his spell in Glasgow.
Godfrey’s time at Atalanta has been remarkably limited.
Across all competitions, he featured just five times, accumulating only 93 minutes of first-team action before falling out of contention.
Injuries have also played a significant role in derailing his progress over recent years.
Throughout his career, the defender has battled several serious setbacks, including a knee ligament injury and a fractured leg suffered in 2022, both of which interrupted what had once looked like a rapidly rising career.
For Rangers, however, the proposed deal represents a relatively low-risk opportunity.
Should Godfrey regain the level that once made him one of Everton’s standout defenders, McInnes could be adding a player with Premier League, international and European experience to a squad eager to return to the summit of Scottish football.
With negotiations reportedly moving in the right direction, Ibrox could soon become the latest stop in Godfrey’s bid to get his career firmly back on track.
