James Trafford may only have just begun his Leeds United career, but the England international has already received an encouraging message from one of his former Manchester City teammates.
The 23-year-old made his first appearance for Daniel Farke’s side on Wednesday evening, starting against Manchester United in the pre-season meeting at Croke Park in Dublin.
It was a significant occasion for Leeds, who have invested heavily in their new goalkeeper after making Trafford the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
There was also an interesting subplot given the opposition.
Trafford spent time at Manchester City before making the move to Yorkshire, meaning facing Manchester United in his first appearance for Leeds added another layer to an already intriguing debut.
And although his night lasted only 45 minutes, the early signs were encouraging.
James Trafford makes Leeds United debut
Farke handed Trafford his first start after the goalkeeper had only recently returned to training following an extended break after England’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
The Leeds boss had already made clear how strongly he felt about bringing Trafford to Elland Road, and the decision to start him against Manchester United showed that the new arrival was already being integrated into the team.
Manchester United took the lead during the first half through Joshua Zirkzee, although Trafford was largely helpless as the Leeds defence was opened up.
Brenden Aaronson subsequently brought Leeds level before half-time.
Trafford was then replaced at the interval, with Alex Cairns taking over between the posts for the second half.
The match eventually finished 1-1 after 90 minutes before Manchester United prevailed in the penalty shootout.
That meant Trafford did not get the opportunity to participate in the decisive penalties, but his individual contribution during the opening 45 minutes still gave Leeds supporters plenty to discuss.
Rodri reacts to Trafford’s first Leeds appearance
Following the match, Trafford took to Instagram to share his reaction to his first outing in a Leeds shirt.
The goalkeeper posted a message to the club’s supporters, writing:
“Great to see the fans tonight.”
Among those reacting to the post was Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
The Spain international responded with clapping emojis, seemingly showing his support for his former teammate following the move to Yorkshire.
Rodri and Trafford shared the Manchester City dressing room, despite the goalkeeper never establishing himself as the club’s undisputed first choice.
The midfielder’s reaction also underlines the relationships Trafford built during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
Another former City teammate, Nico O’Reilly, was even more direct in his response, posting:
“They ain’t ready.”
That message is unlikely to have gone unnoticed by Leeds supporters.
Several of Trafford’s new teammates, including Anton Stach, Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon, also showed their support by liking his post.
Trafford’s numbers offer encouragement
The goalkeeper’s first-half statistics provide further reason for Leeds fans to be encouraged.
According to Sofascore, Trafford made three saves during his 45 minutes against Manchester United, with two of those coming from inside the penalty area.
He also completed a successful run-out and made one high claim.
His distribution was another positive.
Trafford completed 81 per cent of his passes, showing the confidence he possesses when asked to participate in possession and build play from the back.
That aspect of his game is particularly relevant to Farke’s approach.
The Leeds boss wants his goalkeeper to be more than someone who simply stops shots, and Trafford’s ability with the ball was one of the qualities that made him such an attractive target.
Leeds have huge expectations for Trafford:
The scale of Leeds’ investment tells its own story.
The Whites paid £45million to Manchester City for Trafford, making him a club-record signing and placing enormous expectations on the young goalkeeper.
Yet Farke has never attempted to hide how strongly he believes in his potential.
Trafford arrives in Yorkshire after winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his time at Manchester City, despite finding regular first-team football difficult to secure.
He now has the opportunity to establish himself as Leeds’ long-term number one.
The Manchester United friendly was only the beginning.
There will inevitably be mistakes as Trafford settles into a new team, learns Farke’s defensive structure and develops relationships with the centre-backs in front of him.
But his first 45 minutes offered enough encouragement.
And with Rodri, O’Reilly and his new Leeds teammates all showing their support after his debut, Trafford already appears to have plenty of people backing him to succeed at Elland Road.
For Leeds supporters, that could be the most exciting part.
The £45million goalkeeper has barely started his journey yet.
