Celtic supporters have been left searching for answers following one of the most disappointing afternoons of Martin O’Neill’s latest spell in charge, as the Hoops suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat away to Falkirk.
The result was made even more frustrating by the number of opportunities Celtic created throughout the contest. They had enough chances to produce a completely different outcome, but poor finishing and some outstanding goalkeeping ensured they left Falkirk Stadium empty-handed.
For the players, the defeat will be difficult to accept. For the supporters, it was another frustrating reminder that Celtic are currently struggling to turn promising performances into the results expected of them.
However, one member of O’Neill’s squad has now broken his silence with a message that could provide some encouragement to the frustrated Celtic support.
Duran delivers emotional message after Falkirk disappointment
Camilo Duran took to Instagram following Sunday’s defeat to acknowledge the difficult situation facing Celtic while urging supporters to remain behind the team.
The Colombian striker did not attempt to hide the disappointment surrounding the result, describing the current situation as part of a difficult journey that the club must find a way through.
Rather than allowing the defeat to define Celtic’s season, Duran insisted that the players must continue working hard and maintain their belief.
He wrote:
“Difficult moments are also part of the journey. Today we have to endure, work in silence, and keep the faith.
“This is not the end, it’s just one more test.
“Everything will change because those who never stop fighting always find a way to get back up.”
It was a defiant message from the striker, who clearly understands the frustration surrounding the club after another disappointing result.
The words about keeping the faith will particularly resonate with supporters who have watched Celtic endure a difficult run of results, both domestically and in Europe.
Duran’s message also makes clear that he believes the players must take responsibility, continue working and find a response on the pitch rather than allowing the latest setback to derail their campaign.
Duran had opportunities to change the outcome
The striker was among the Celtic players who experienced a frustrating afternoon in front of goal.
Duran struck the post with one attempt and also directed a header straight at Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain when he had an opportunity to make a difference.
On another day, either opportunity could have ended in the back of the net, potentially changing the entire complexion of the contest.
Celtic created enough chances to leave Falkirk with a positive result, but their inability to convert those opportunities proved costly.
The visitors were also punished by mistakes at the other end. Cameron Carter-Vickers was culpable for Falkirk’s opening goal, which arrived inside the first few minutes through Ethan Ross.
Haissem Hassan’s failure to track back also contributed to the second goal, leaving O’Neill with plenty to examine after watching his side lose 2-0.
It was Celtic’s first defeat in Falkirk in almost two decades, adding another unwanted detail to an afternoon the club will quickly want to forget.
Martin O’Neill admits Celtic could have scored five
Duran was not the only Celtic figure to acknowledge the missed opportunities.
Martin O’Neill also reflected on the performance after the final whistle, admitting that his team had created enough chances to score several goals.
Speaking to Celtic TV, the manager said:
“It was really disappointing to lose the game, but we created a lot of chances.
“On another day, we could have scored about five. It didn’t happen. The goalkeeper made some really fantastic saves, and sometimes it goes like that.
“And I think that’s the point that I want to take out of it. It’s disappointing, of course, Celtic are not used to losing football matches, certainly not recently.”
O’Neill’s comments highlighted the fine margins that contributed to Celtic’s defeat, although the defensive mistakes and missed chances will inevitably attract attention.
The manager will need his players to respond quickly, particularly with another difficult assignment approaching.
Celtic face another major test against Besiktas
Celtic’s attention now turns towards their Europa League meeting with Besiktas, a match that carries considerable importance following their disappointing start to the competition.
The Turkish side have collected seven points from their opening three matches, recording two victories and a draw. Celtic, meanwhile, have lost all three of their Europa League fixtures against Ferencvaros, Benfica and Celta Vigo.
That leaves the Hoops with zero points and sitting second bottom of the league-phase standings.
It is hardly the position supporters would have expected, and the defeat at Falkirk has done little to improve the mood surrounding the club.
Duran’s message about continuing to fight and keeping the faith therefore arrives at a difficult moment for Celtic.
The Colombian will hope that his words are followed by a much-improved performance when the Hoops return to European action.
For now, the message is simple: Celtic must learn from the disappointment, recover their confidence and give their supporters something to believe in again.
