Ibrox hero Kris Boyd launches a blistering, no-holds-barred attack on the Celtic squad following their crushing defeat to Benfica, claiming certain stars were even worse than Sinisalo

Celtic fans are furious after another European humiliation. Martin O’Neill’s side were thrashed 4-1 by Benfica at the Estádio da Luz, and former Rangers striker turned pundit Kris Boyd has not held back in laying the blame firmly at the feet of three underperforming players he rates even lower than goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo.

Celtic barely had time to settle before the damage was done. Inside five minutes Dane Murray clumsily brought down Jhon Durán in the box, conceding a penalty that the Colombian cheekily chipped down the middle.

Alexander Bah made it 2-0 with a close-range volley in the 20th minute, and Durán added his second before half-time to leave the visitors 3-0 down and looking completely overrun.

Camilo Durán pulled one back with a brave header after the break to give the travelling support a brief moment of hope, but Benfica added a late fourth through Vangelis Pavlidis to complete a miserable night for the Scottish champions.

Boyd zeroed in on the players he believes were most responsible for the collapse. Dane Murray’s early penalty concession set the tone for a night of defensive chaos, and the young centre-back struggled to cope with Benfica’s attackers for the rest of the evening.

Colby Donovan was given a particularly torrid time by Gianluca Prestianni and offered almost nothing going forward. Oliver Sørensen, preferred in midfield to Benjamin Nygren, failed to impose himself and looked out of his depth against the Portuguese side’s engine room.

In Boyd’s assessment, those three were even worse than Sinisalo, who himself had a difficult night. The Finnish keeper could do little about the penalty or Bah’s finish, but was criticised for not doing better on Durán’s second goal.

Captain Callum McGregor also came in for stick after a tired display, while several others failed to hit the required standard.

There were rare positives. Camilo Durán was Celtic’s brightest spark, hitting the bar, scoring, and later striking the post. Kieran Tierney showed more composure than most, and Haissem Hassan provided the assist for the goal.

But Boyd’s blunt verdict was clear: Murray, Donovan and Sørensen were the main culprits, performing at a level even below Sinisalo’s struggling display. The 4-1 thrashing leaves O’Neill with plenty of questions to answer as Celtic look to recover from another painful European setback.
