NafisaLeeds United have enjoyed a largely positive start to the new season, although their unbeaten run was finally brought to an end in dramatic fashion in midweek.
The Whites suffered a painful 6-3 defeat to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, surrendering a two-goal advantage in one of the most extraordinary collapses of the campaign so far.
However, the result is not the only development to have rocked Elland Road this week.
Leeds had largely managed to avoid the kind of player controversy that can derail a dressing room, particularly after Daniel Farke and the club made a concerted effort during the summer to move on players who did not want to remain at Elland Road.
Everything appeared to be moving in the right direction.
That was until Thursday brought a completely unexpected announcement from one of Farke’s first-team players.
And given the timing, it is another situation the Leeds manager will now have to keep a close eye on.

Leeds winger Noah Okafor has announced that he is stepping away from the Switzerland national team following a lengthy statement explaining his decision.
The announcement has come as a major surprise, with the Leeds player appearing to have effectively called time on his international career for the foreseeable future.
Okafor has made it clear that his decision was not simply motivated by frustration over his lack of playing time.
Instead, the 25-year-old has pointed towards his treatment while away with Switzerland, claiming that his trust was broken and that promises made to him were not kept.
The Leeds winger was particularly critical of the circumstances surrounding his involvement against Algeria, suggesting that even mistakes made well away from his own team’s goal were treated in a way that affected him deeply.
Okafor wrote:
“All the more disappointing for me was what I experienced there. Not because I played little, but because of the way I was treated. For me, it was the most difficult time of my career so far.
“One thing up front: I know that some will think again now: ‘Oh, Okafor again, he’s just offended because he hardly played’.
“But again: My decision has nothing to do with my playing minutes. I traveled to the tournament to support my team in the best possible way. On the pitch and off it.
“Things happened that hit me deeply. Trust was broken. Promises were not kept. And when I was allowed to play against Algeria, even small mistakes far away from our goal were reacted to in a way that hit me deeply.”
The statement has immediately raised questions about what exactly happened behind the scenes during Switzerland’s recent campaign.
Okafor has not suggested that his decision is related to his situation at Leeds, instead making it clear that his frustration stems from his experience with the national team.
The timing is nevertheless significant for Farke.
The next international break is now only a little over two weeks away, with Switzerland scheduled to face Macedonia, Scotland, Slovenia and Switzerland.
Unless there is a dramatic change in circumstances, Okafor will not be part of the squad for those fixtures.
For Leeds, that could ultimately prove to be an unexpected benefit despite the circumstances surrounding the winger’s decision.
Leeds to benefit from this situation
There is no doubt that the situation involving Okafor will be a difficult one for everyone involved.
Leeds will need to ensure that the winger has the right support following his decision and that the events surrounding his international career do not affect his confidence or performances at club level.
From a purely footballing perspective, however, Okafor stepping away from international duty could provide Leeds with a significant advantage.
Rather than travelling away during international breaks, the winger will now remain at Thorp Arch and have additional time to work with Farke’s coaching staff.
That could give Leeds more opportunities to focus on his fitness, sharpness and individual development while the majority of his international colleagues are away representing their countries.
Last season, Okafor continued to join up with Switzerland during international breaks despite the fitness and injury concerns he had experienced.
This time, things could be very different.
If his decision stands, Leeds will have their winger available for more of the season and will be able to give him additional time on the training ground.
That could prove particularly valuable as Farke looks to keep his squad fresh during what promises to be a demanding campaign.
For Okafor himself, the hope will be that stepping away from the international environment allows him to put the recent disappointment behind him and concentrate fully on his club football.
Leeds supporters will certainly be hoping that is the outcome.
After all, the biggest priority now is ensuring that Wednesday night’s collapse against Chelsea does not become the beginning of a difficult spell.
A focused and refreshed Okafor could yet play an important role in helping Leeds respond.
