NafisaMotherwell may have left Ibrox empty-handed after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Rangers, but the Fir Park side wasted little time making their feelings known after one of the biggest talking points of the afternoon.
And this time, it was not the result that caught attention.
Instead, the spotlight quickly turned towards the controversial penalty awarded to Rangers during a fiery Premiership encounter at Ibrox, with Motherwell’s social-media team delivering a brutal verdict that has already sparked plenty of reaction.
The visitors were furious with the decision after Tom Sparrow was penalised for his challenge on Djeidi Gassama inside the Motherwell penalty area.
Rangers had already taken the lead through Ryan Naderi when the incident occurred, with the referee pointing to the spot after Sparrow’s attempted clearance resulted in contact with Gassama.
The decision was subsequently checked by VAR and upheld, leaving Rangers with the opportunity to double their advantage and put the game beyond Motherwell.
But what happened next only added fuel to the controversy.
Minsu Kim stepped up from the penalty spot with the chance to score his first goal for Rangers, only to send his effort wide of the post.
And Motherwell’s official social-media account wasted absolutely no time in making its feelings known.
Sharing footage of the incident on X, the club wrote:
“Rangers have an incredibly soft looking penalty. Justice done as it’s blasted wide of the post.”
That post has now become one of the major talking points from a match which Rangers ultimately managed to win despite failing to convert several opportunities.
Motherwell’s wording was particularly eye-catching because it effectively suggested that Rangers had been handed a controversial advantage — before celebrating the fact that Kim failed to take advantage of it.
The penalty decision itself will inevitably continue to generate debate, particularly after footage of the challenge began circulating following the final whistle.
From Motherwell’s perspective, however, there was no need for another opportunity to argue their case.
They had already made their position perfectly clear.
The controversy came during a match which had already been turned on its head for Motherwell before the penalty incident.
Rangers had taken an early lead through Naderi after Alex Paulsen made a costly error.
The Motherwell goalkeeper attempted to deal with the ball outside his penalty area but was dispossessed by Naderi, who took full advantage to score the only goal of the afternoon.
It was a particularly cruel moment for Motherwell, who had arrived at Ibrox unbeaten in the Premiership and fresh from an impressive 3-0 victory over Dundee United.
Instead, their unbeaten start was brought to an end by a single goal.
The visitors did, however, have plenty to take from the fact that Rangers were unable to put the game to bed despite creating further opportunities.
Kim’s penalty miss was the most obvious example.
For Motherwell, it was arguably the perfect response to an incident they clearly felt should never have resulted in a spot-kick in the first place.
And their social-media post ensured that the controversy would continue long after the final whistle.
For Rangers, meanwhile, the victory represents another important step forward under Derek McInnes.
The Ibrox side have now won three consecutive Premiership matches against Aberdeen, Falkirk and Motherwell, giving them genuine momentum heading into the next stage of the campaign.
Yet the victory was not without its problems.
Rangers captain Lawrence Shankland was forced off extremely early after appearing to suffer a hamstring problem, creating another major concern for McInnes with the Old Firm double-header against Celtic looming.
The manager will therefore take the three points and another clean sheet, but there will be plenty to discuss after the Motherwell game.
And thanks to their explosive social-media intervention, the penalty decision is likely to remain one of the biggest talking points.
Motherwell might not have been able to get anything from the match.
But their social-media admin certainly made sure they got the final word on the controversy.
