NafisaLeeds United appear to have suffered a major setback in the summer transfer window after reports revealed Premier League rivals Fulham are now on the verge of completing a deal for long-term Whites target Shea Charles.
Daniel Farke has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his midfield before the transfer window closes, with Charles emerging as one of Leeds’ priority targets over recent months.
The Southampton star had been admired at Elland Road for some time, but negotiations repeatedly hit a stumbling block over the Saints’ valuation.
Now, it looks as though Fulham have taken advantage of that delay.
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Fulham are now in advanced negotiations to sign the 22-year-old midfielder from Southampton. Talks between the two clubs are understood to be progressing well around a fee of approximately £25 million, while personal terms are not expected to present any significant obstacle.
If completed, it would bring an end to Leeds’ lengthy pursuit of one of their most highly-rated midfield targets.
Leeds had identified Charles as an ideal addition thanks to his versatility, composure on the ball and ability to operate in several midfield roles.
The Northern Ireland international came through Manchester City’s academy before joining Southampton in a deal worth around £10.5 million in 2023.
Since then, he has developed into one of the Saints’ standout young players, with his calm distribution, defensive intelligence and work-rate attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.
Despite Leeds’ admiration, Southampton consistently refused to lower their asking price, standing firm on their £25 million valuation throughout negotiations.
That reluctance to compromise appears to have opened the door for Fulham.
The London club can also offer Charles immediate Premier League football, something that has reportedly helped swing the race in their favour.
Manchester City are also set to benefit from the transfer, having retained a 15 per cent sell-on clause when Charles left the Etihad Stadium.
Although missing out on Charles represents a disappointment, Leeds are expected to quickly turn their attention towards alternative midfield targets as the club continue reshaping Daniel Farke’s squad before the transfer deadline.
The Whites remain active in the market and are still confident of completing their club-record move for James Trafford, with talks over the Manchester City goalkeeper continuing to progress.
While Charles now looks destined for Craven Cottage, Leeds are determined to ensure this setback does not derail what has already been another ambitious summer under Paraag Marathe and the 49ers.
