Rangers have been dealt a significant setback in the transfer market after long-time midfield target Jens Hjerto-Dahl moved a step closer to completing a lucrative switch to the English Premier League.

The Ibrox hierarchy have spent much of the summer searching for young talent capable of strengthening Derek McInnes’ squad, with Hjerto-Dahl emerging as one of the club’s standout midfield targets after months of scouting.

However, despite serious interest from Rangers and talks over a possible move, the Norwegian sensation now looks destined for England instead.

According to reports, newly-promoted Premier League outfit Hull City have surged ahead in the race after agreeing a club-record deal worth around £10 million with Tromso for the highly-rated playmaker.

The 20-year-old has already completed his medical, with paperwork now being finalised before an official announcement.

Rangers had tracked Hjerto-Dahl since the January transfer window and were understood to have tabled an offer worth around £8.5 million, matching interest from Cardiff City.

However, neither proposal proved enough to convince Tromso, who held firm on their valuation before Hull City finally met their demands.

Hjerto-Dahl has become one of Norway’s brightest young stars after making more than 100 senior appearances for his hometown club despite still only being 20 years old.

The Norway Under-21 international was even named among the 100 best players under the age of 20 by the CIES Football Observatory, with many comparing his elegant style of play to Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard.

The midfielder’s expected move represents another reminder of the financial challenge Rangers face when competing with clubs backed by Premier League resources.

While missing out on Hjerto-Dahl is undoubtedly disappointing, Rangers remain active in the transfer market. Following the arrival of Japanese winger Daisuke Yokota, Derek McInnes is still pushing to strengthen several areas of his squad before the summer window closes, with further additions expected as the club prepares for another busy domestic and European campaign.
