NafisaRangers have officially completed another important piece of business this summer after confirming the arrival of experienced Scottish football figure David Hopkin, with the deal for the new Head of Academy Scouting being finalised and ratified on Monday.
While much of the transfer conversation around Ibrox has centred on potential first-team arrivals such as Lewis Ferguson, Jens Hjerto-Dahl and Vanja Dragojevic, the club have continued strengthening behind the scenes as Derek McInnes oversees a major rebuild throughout every level of the football department.
Hopkin joins Rangers after several successful years at Premier League side Crystal Palace, where he earned a strong reputation for identifying emerging talent north of the border. During his time at Selhurst Park, he played a significant role in bringing highly-rated Scottish youngsters Justin Devenney, Scott Banks and Dylan Reid to the London club.
The 55-year-old officially replaces James Fowler, who left Rangers earlier this summer to join Newcastle United, and will now oversee academy recruitment as the club looks to strengthen its long-term pathway for young players.
The appointment continues an extensive restructuring at Auchenhowie. Earlier this summer Rangers also brought in Stig Inge Bjørnebye as Performance Director, welcomed Jim McAlister back to the club, while McInnes strengthened his coaching staff with Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin, Craig Clark and goalkeeping coach Allan McGregor.
Speaking during Rangers’ pre-season preparations in Spain, McInnes stressed that every appointment has been based solely on quality.
“I think what you always want in any position is the best man for the job. I think that’s, for me, that’s so important. Whether we’re trying the best head of recruitment, the best head of sports science, the best goalkeeping coach.
“Right across the board, you just want the people who are the best for the job. It certainly doesn’t do any harm if there is an affiliation.
“It’s good to have that affiliation. If you get a positive spin for that, great. But they’re there because they’re good at their job, not because there’s an affiliation with the club.”
While Hopkin’s arrival has now been wrapped up, attention remains firmly on Rangers’ transfer business, particularly in midfield.
One name heavily linked with Ibrox has been Lewis Ferguson, but fresh developments from Italy suggest any hopes of bringing the Scotland international back to Glasgow this summer are fading rapidly.
Reports indicate Rangers made tentative enquiries over the Bologna captain, whose leadership and experience have made him an attractive option for McInnes. However, Ferguson has responded not with transfer hints but with another display of commitment to his Serie A club.
Following Bologna’s pre-season friendly defeat at the weekend, most of the squad were given a scheduled day off. Ferguson, however, chose to spend his free day completing extra gym work and individual training sessions on the pitch in the Italian Alps as he continues building fitness after returning from World Cup duty.
According to reports in Italy, around 50 Bologna supporters watched the midfielder train alone, underlining his determination to establish himself under new head coach Domenico Tedesco rather than push for a move away.
His actions have been widely interpreted as a clear indication that he remains fully committed to Bologna despite speculation surrounding his future.
With Ferguson now appearing increasingly unlikely to leave Italy, Rangers are pressing ahead with alternative midfield targets.
The Light Blues remain optimistic of completing a deal for Tromso sensation Jens Hjerto-Dahl, while Serbian midfielder Vanja Dragojevic is already on his way to Ibrox after Rangers agreed a deal with Partizan Belgrade. The club are also continuing to assess defensive reinforcements as McInnes reshapes his squad before the new Scottish Premiership campaign.
Although Ferguson may not be returning to Scotland anytime soon, Rangers’ busy summer shows no signs of slowing down. With another off-field appointment now officially completed and more transfer activity expected in the coming days, the Ibrox rebuild continues to gather momentum both on and off the pitch.
