NafisaRangers continue to reshape the club behind the scenes as preparations for the new campaign gather pace, with Derek McInnes not only strengthening his playing squad but also putting together a trusted coaching structure capable of supporting his long-term vision at Ibrox.
The early weeks of the summer have already brought plenty of movement both on and off the pitch. Fresh faces have arrived in the dressing room, while key appointments within the football department have highlighted the club’s determination to build a stronger foundation ahead of another demanding season.
As supporters eagerly await further transfer announcements, attention has also turned toward the backroom staff, where another significant addition now appears to be edging ever closer.
One familiar face could soon be making an emotional return to the club, with reports suggesting Rangers are ready to welcome back one of the greatest goalkeepers in their history.
According to the Daily Record, Rangers icon Allan McGregor is on the verge of returning to Ibrox with immediate effect.
The 44-year-old is widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers ever to represent the Glasgow giants.
His final appearance for Rangers came back in 2023 and, since hanging up his gloves, he has largely stayed away from the spotlight, apart from a brief spell as goalkeeping coach during Barry Ferguson’s interim coaching team last year.
McGregor, Ferguson, Neil McCann and Billy Dodds stepped in after Philippe Clement was dismissed in February 2025, but the group departed once Russell Martin was officially appointed as Rangers manager.
Now, however, the report claims McInnes has convinced McGregor to return to the club as Rangers’ new goalkeeping coach following Sal Bibbo’s departure to Coventry City.
It is understood McGregor was already back at Auchenhowie today to take part in training, with an official announcement potentially arriving within the next few hours.
During an outstanding playing career, McGregor featured in more than 750 competitive matches, including 505 appearances for Rangers across two successful spells.
His honours include four Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and five League Cups, while he also helped Rangers reach the UEFA Europa League finals in both 2008 and 2022.
Away from Ibrox, McGregor also achieved promotion to the Premier League with Hull City and earned 42 international caps for Scotland.
The experienced figure is expected to replace former Arsenal, Reading and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Sal Bibbo, who only joined Rangers last summer before working under both Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.
McInnes has already assembled much of his coaching staff since arriving at the club, bringing in Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin, James Barrow and Craig Clark as part of his new-look backroom team.
Rangers have also officially confirmed the appointment of Stig Inge Bjørnebye as the club’s new performance director, further underlining the sweeping changes taking place behind the scenes at Ibrox this summer.
