The appointment of a boss with deep knowledge of Scottish football has generated considerable excitement among the Light Blues faithful, who are hoping for a strong push on both domestic and European fronts next season.
The club has wasted little time in reinforcing the squad since the end of the last campaign. Proven Scottish talents and committed supporters of the club have already been brought in, signalling a clear intent to build a team that understands the demands of playing at Ibrox.
With a manager who knows the league inside out now at the helm, there is growing belief that further additions from within Scotland could follow as the transfer window heats up. The side is looking to add depth and quality across the pitch as they prepare for another demanding campaign.
It is in this context that Rangers are reportedly closing in on a significant midfield reinforcement. According to reports on X, the Light Blues are on the verge of signing Hearts central midfielder Cammy Devlin on a free transfer this summer.
The Australia international’s contract at Tynecastle is set to expire shortly, and Rangers appear poised to secure his services without paying a transfer fee.
Devlin is understood to have reached an agreement on personal terms and is expected to complete his move to Ibrox in the coming days.
Should the deal be finalised at the start of July, the new manager would have two of his former Hearts players — Devlin and Lawrence Shankland — as important members of his squad next season.
The club had also been linked with a move for Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson, a Scotland international who featured at the recent World Cup. Ferguson, 26, made only 17 Serie A starts for the Italian club in the 2025/26 season. While he could be a solid addition, many believe Rangers may be landing an even more suitable option in Devlin.
Why Devlin could be the smarter signing for Rangers than Ferguson:
Ferguson is a Scotland international who has gained experience in one of Europe’s top leagues, but he has started just 27 league games over the past two seasons. Devlin, by contrast, has started 49 Premiership matches for Hearts across the same period, highlighting his greater reliability and durability.
Their performances last season further suggest that the Australian offers more to the team in central midfield. Devlin’s impressive defensive numbers indicate he would be a stronger ball-winner, something the Ibrox side desperately needs after struggling to keep clean sheets in the final stretch of the previous campaign.
Averaging significantly more tackles and interceptions per game, Devlin would likely disrupt opposition attacks more effectively than Ferguson. He also scored more league goals than the Scottish midfielder last term and has proven himself consistently in the Premiership under the current Rangers boss as recently as last season.
Ferguson, meanwhile, has not played regularly in Scotland since the 2021/22 campaign, raising questions about how quickly he would adapt after four years away in Italy.
Rangers could therefore be making an outstanding piece of business with Devlin, especially given his strong showings for a Hearts side that pushed hard for the title last season.
