Leeds United are set to take on Champions League-bound RB Leipzig at Elland Road in what is expected to be the club’s penultimate fixture of the upcoming pre-season programme.
Leipzig secured a third-place finish in last season’s Bundesliga campaign, meaning they will provide top-level opposition for Daniel Farke’s side as preparations continue ahead of the Premier League opener away to Nottingham Forest on August 22.
The encounter against the German outfit follows Leeds’ summer tour of the United States, where they are scheduled to face Wrexham, Sunderland and Liverpool.
Meanwhile, construction activity has continued around Elland Road throughout the off-season as Leeds move forward with plans to increase the stadium’s capacity to approximately 53,000 seats.
The work has been carefully structured to minimise disruption on matchdays, with capacity remaining unchanged for the time being. Current plans involve the enlarged North Stand effectively being built over and behind the existing structure as part of the wider redevelopment project.
Leipzig arrive with one of Europe’s most exciting young talents in Ivorian attacker Yan Diomande, although widespread reports suggest he could secure a move elsewhere before the transfer window closes, potentially even to a Premier League side.
The fixture will kick off at 2pm on August 8 and is anticipated to be followed by a final pre-season match at Elland Road the following weekend.
With the Bundesliga season beginning on the same weekend as the Premier League, Leipzig should arrive at a very similar stage of preparation as Leeds, making it an especially valuable contest for both sides.
