Leeds United have the financial resources required to pursue Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande this summer, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
The Yorkshire outfit are eager to demonstrate their “ambition” and place themselves at the head of the queue for the highly-rated centre-back, who has attracted significant Premier League attention in recent transfer windows.
The 49ers are prepared to provide Daniel Farke with substantial support in the market following a strong conclusion to last season, and Diomande has emerged as one of the club’s leading objectives.
Leeds reportedly view the pursuit of the Ivory Coast international as a genuine “statement of intent” ahead of the 2026/27 campaign and are willing to surpass their existing transfer record to complete the deal.
Record-breaking move on the cards
The club’s current highest transfer fee remains the £34million spent to sign Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim.
Any successful move for Diomande would comfortably exceed that figure.
The 22-year-old has become a consistent performer for Sporting over recent seasons, gaining valuable experience in the Champions League while helping the Portuguese side compete for major honours.
At present, the defender is away on international duty with Ivory Coast at the World Cup, but speculation surrounding his future continues to intensify.

Leeds may be the latest club to enter the race, but they are certainly not the first.
Newcastle United were strongly linked with a move for Diomande during the January transfer window, while Crystal Palace came remarkably close to signing him last summer.
Reports emerging from Portugal at the time suggested Palace had even reached an agreement with Sporting regarding a potential transfer fee, identifying Diomande as an ideal long-term successor to Marc Guehi.

The defender currently possesses a release clause worth £69million.
However, reports in recent weeks have suggested that Sporting could be prepared to negotiate for a fee slightly above £40million.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Diomande has climbed to the very top of Leeds United’s summer wishlist.
Brown believes the defender represents exactly the type of player the club should be targeting if they want to continue progressing in the Premier League and potentially challenge for European qualification in future seasons.
He suggested Diomande is “exactly the type of player” Leeds need and even hinted that the Ivorian could eventually take a place in the starting line-up ahead of Joe Rodon despite the Welshman enjoying an impressive 2025/26 campaign.
For now, Leeds appear ready to test their financial strength.
The club are reportedly prepared to commit a significant portion of their summer budget towards landing Diomande, a move that would not only strengthen the squad but also underline the scale of their ambitions moving forward.
