The summer months were always expected to bring movement at Ibrox. After finishing below expectations domestically and falling short of the standards supporters demand, attention quickly turned toward rebuilding plans, recruitment priorities and the long-term direction of the football department.
For supporters, much of the focus has naturally centred on incoming signings and potential squad reinforcements. However, football clubs are often shaped just as much by developments in the dugout as they are by transfer activity on the pitch.
And over the last few days, speculation surrounding Rangers’ managerial situation has intensified considerably.

Danny Rohl edging closer to Salzburg move
Rangers manager Danny Rohl is now expected to be unveiled as the new head coach of Red Bull Salzburg in the very near future, with official confirmation seemingly only a matter of time away.
The Austrian side recently identified Rohl as their preferred candidate to become the club’s 18th permanent head coach and subsequently opened discussions with Rangers.
Despite being tied to a long-term contract at Ibrox, the German tactician has reportedly been eager to accept the opportunity, allowing negotiations to advance at pace.
In fact, discussions have moved so quickly that Rangers have already begun exploring alternatives for life after Rohl.
Heavyweight support behind appointment
One of the key factors behind Salzburg’s pursuit has reportedly been the strong backing Rohl received from influential figures within the wider Red Bull football network.
Among those believed to have championed his appointment is Jurgen Klopp, whose endorsement carried significant weight during the decision-making process.
According to Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten, the deal is now effectively complete, with Rohl’s appointment expected to be confirmed shortly.
The report indicates that Red Bull Salzburg have agreed to pay Rangers a compensation package worth €2 million to secure the services of the 37-year-old coach.
Announcement expected imminently:
While an official statement is anticipated on Sunday, reports suggest the latest confirmation could arrive is Monday.
The urgency is understandable.
Red Bull Salzburg are scheduled to return for pre-season training in just a few days, and club officials are keen for Rohl to be in place before preparations begin.
His familiarity with the Red Bull football model is viewed as another major advantage.
Rohl previously worked within the Red Bull system as a match analyst at RB Leipzig before progressing into a coaching role.
He later served as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl during the Austrian’s successful spell in Germany.
That background has convinced Salzburg executives that he possesses the knowledge and understanding required to restore the club’s dominance.
Rangers exit comes without silverware
Should the move be finalised as expected, Rohl’s time at Rangers will come to an end without adding a trophy to the cabinet.
The German guided the Gers to a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership and ultimately fell short of delivering the success many supporters had hoped for when he arrived.
Despite that, Salzburg remain convinced of his potential.
The Austrian giants endured a frustrating campaign of their own last season, finishing third in the Bundesliga, and believe Rohl can oversee a return to the summit.
Rangers already planning next appointment:
Attention has now shifted toward identifying Rohl’s successor.
Among the leading contenders is Hearts manager Derek McInnes, who continues to be strongly linked with a return to Ibrox.
The move would fit with Rangers’ apparent desire to adopt a more Scottish identity this summer.
The club have already secured the signing of Scotland international Lawrence Shankland following his departure from Hearts earlier in the window.
Further appointments and additions could follow if McInnes eventually takes charge.
Interestingly, Rohl himself was not Rangers’ first-choice candidate when the club searched for a manager following Russell Martin’s departure.
Both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat are understood to have turned down the opportunity before Rangers ultimately moved for the German coach.
