However, Newcastle’s position on the goalkeeper had remained unclear, with Pope previously instructed to return for pre-season preparations with the club.
Now, though, a clearer picture has emerged regarding his long-term future at St James’ Park.
According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle are now prepared to consider offers for the former England international this summer.
The club are not actively forcing him out of the door, but they do acknowledge that a departure may represent the most realistic route for him to secure regular first-team football.
Newcastle have already moved ahead in their succession planning by securing the signing of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims in a deal worth £18.5m.
They are also believed to be monitoring Manchester City’s James Trafford closely, with a potential move expected once Pope’s situation is fully resolved.
Leeds can’t afford to dither anymore:
Leeds United had initially considered entering next season with Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri as their primary goalkeeping options, potentially avoiding another major investment in that area this summer.
However, Perri has still not fully convinced since arriving at Elland Road, and with Darlow’s future now uncertain, the situation has become far more complicated than originally anticipated.
