While supporters often focus on incoming transfers and ambitious signings, some of the most significant developments happen quietly behind the scenes. Contract decisions, squad reshuffles and difficult departures can often shape the direction of a club just as much as any new arrival.
At Leeds United, attention has naturally turned towards strengthening Daniel Farke’s squad after a successful return to Premier League football. The club are already assessing several positions ahead of the new campaign, while discussions continue regarding contract renewals, potential exits and long-term planning across the first team and academy setup.
For some players, this summer represents an opportunity to begin a new chapter elsewhere. For others, it is a chance to cement their place in the club’s future plans.
One departure, however, has felt inevitable for quite some time.
Leeds United have officially confirmed that Illan Meslier will leave Elland Road this summer following the expiration of his contract.
The announcement was considered significant enough for the club to release a dedicated statement before publishing the remainder of their retained list for the 2026/27 campaign.
In their message, Leeds said:
“Leeds United can confirm Illan Meslier will leave the club this summer, upon the expiration of his contract at Elland Road”.
“The goalkeeper played a big part in the club’s promotion-winning campaigns to the Premier League in both 2019/20 and 2024/25 and departs as a two-time champion. He will always be part of our proud history… Thank you, Illan, everyone at Leeds United wishes you all the best with your next steps and future career.”
Meslier’s Leeds story has been one filled with both memorable highs and difficult lows.
The French goalkeeper initially arrived on loan from FC Lorient in August 2019 and quickly caught attention with his calmness and distribution from the back.
His first-team debut came during an FA Cup clash away at Arsenal in January 2020, where he produced an assured display despite the occasion.
Later that season, an opportunity opened up after Kiko Casilla received an eight-match suspension, allowing Meslier to establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
At the time, the young Frenchman appeared to bring stability between the posts, and many supporters viewed his emergence as one of the factors that helped Leeds finally secure promotion back to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa.
That impressive introduction earned him a permanent transfer that summer.
His first campaign in the Premier League was largely positive, with Meslier showing maturity beyond his years while helping Leeds comfortably retain their top-flight status.
However, cracks gradually began to appear over the following seasons.
A combination of defensive instability, tactical issues and individual mistakes saw confidence begin to fade. One particularly costly moment came when he allowed a free-kick from Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey to slip through his grasp and into the net.
When Leeds found themselves battling relegation once again during the 2022/23 season, Sam Allardyce made the difficult decision to remove Meslier from the starting lineup.
Reflecting on that choice, Allardyce later explained:
“He looked nervous when he was the mainstay, it looked like it was harming him”.
“I had watched the previous games and I spoke to quite a few people who had been at Leeds watching him quite a lot and the first thing they said is ‘he’s a great goalkeeper, but he is having a crisis at the moment’. He did not take it well, a bit of sulking, but when you go in as a manager you have to make these decisions”.
Despite having opportunities to leave following relegation, Meslier remained at Elland Road and attempted to rebuild his standing as Leeds pushed for an immediate return to the Premier League.
There were moments that suggested a revival was possible. Strong performances, including an impressive display away at Leicester City, reminded supporters of the qualities that had once made him such a highly regarded prospect.
Yet consistency continued to prove elusive.
Costly errors gradually reappeared, and by the latter stages of the 2024/25 promotion campaign, mistakes against teams such as Hull City and Swansea City became increasingly damaging.
Once again, he found himself replaced by the backup goalkeeper.
The arrival of Lucas Perri the following summer effectively pushed Meslier further down the pecking order, and the 2025/26 season became largely frustrating from a personal perspective.
Limited to occasional appearances on the bench when injuries struck, he spent most of the campaign watching from the sidelines.
Although rumours surfaced linking him with a move to Turkish side Besiktas, no concrete deal ever materialised.
Throughout that period, Meslier remained a supportive figure around the squad, often seen celebrating victories despite his lack of involvement.
One image, however, seemed to capture the reality of his situation more than any statement ever could.
After Leeds completed another successful campaign and supporters celebrated at Elland Road following the final home match against Brighton, television cameras caught Meslier sitting alone inside one of the goalmouths.
For many fans, it felt like the symbolic conclusion to a six-year journey that never quite unfolded the way anyone expected.
By the time of his departure, Meslier had accumulated 215 appearances for Leeds United while recording 72 clean sheets.
At just 26 years old, there remains plenty of time for him to rediscover his best form elsewhere.
A fresh environment may be exactly what he needs.
Meanwhile, Leeds now face important decisions regarding their goalkeeping department.
The retained list confirmed that the club remain in discussions with both Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns, whose contracts are also due to expire.
Whether Darlow receives assurances regarding his role as first-choice goalkeeper could prove pivotal in determining his future.
Beyond that, Leeds are expected to explore the market for at least one new goalkeeper, regardless of whether Darlow stays or departs.
The retained list also revealed that loan midfielder Facundo Buonanotte will return to his parent club, while discussions continue with Sam Byram over a potential new deal.
Several academy players have also been released, although a number of young prospects have been offered professional contracts as the club continues planning for the future.
Of course, the retained list only tells part of the story.
With several fringe players facing uncertain futures and others entering the final year of their contracts, there is still plenty of business to be conducted before the new season begins.
The departure of Illan Meslier may be one of the first major developments of the summer at Leeds United, but it is unlikely to be the last.
