In football, moments like this always carry a heavier weight, especially when they involve individuals who helped shape the club away from the pitch as much as on it.

Within the Celtic community, former board members and long-serving administrators are often remembered not just for their roles, but for the eras they helped guide the club through.

Kevin Kelly was one of those rare figures whose influence stretched across decades of change, stability, and difficult decision-making at Parkhead.

Former Celtic chairman Kevin Kelly has passed away, the club has confirmed.

Kelly served at board level for more than three decades between 1971 and 1994, including a spell as chairman from 1991 until 1994. He was also a lifelong supporter and the descendant of club great James Kelly, Celtic’s first-ever captain.

In a statement, Celtic said: “Celtic Football Club can confirm that former Chairman, Kevin Kelly, passed away peacefully yesterday morning after a short illness.

“Kevin was Celtic Chairman from 1991-1994, and a director and passionate supporter of the club over many years.

“Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with Kevin’s family at this very difficult time.”

During his long service at board level, Kelly played a part in some of the most important behind-the-scenes discussions in Celtic’s modern evolution. His time at the club coincided with periods where the future direction of Celtic Park itself was actively debated, with major proposals being explored at boardroom level.

Among those discussions were early plans that considered alternative stadium developments, including a possible relocation to Cambuslang before those ideas were eventually set aside in favour of the redevelopment and long-term expansion of Celtic Park into the iconic ground it is today.

Kelly eventually stepped away from the board in 1994 following Fergus McCann’s takeover, bringing to an end a long-standing chapter of involvement that had spanned more than 30 years.
