Former Rangers flop Mateusz Zukowski is currently enjoying a remarkable resurgence after earning his first cap for Poland and moving closer to a major transfer to Bundesliga heavyweight Eintracht Frankfurt.
Rangers originally secured his signature as a 20-year-old in a £400,000 deal from Lechia Gdansk, handing him a four-year contract in January 2022.
Initially brought in as a full-back, Zukowski made just one appearance under Giovanni van Bronckhorst — featuring in a Scottish Cup victory over Annan Athletic — before disappearing from the first-team picture entirely.
He was later loaned out to Lech Poznan, but the Polish side opted against making the deal permanent, eventually leading to a low-cost exit to Slask Wroclaw.
After that, Zukowski rebuilt his career with a move to German second division side FC Magdeburg, where he was surprisingly converted into a forward.
That tactical switch proved to be a turning point, as he produced a stunning return of 17 goals in just 22 starts this season, performances that ultimately earned him an international call-up.
The 24-year-old has now made his senior Poland debut against Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in what once looked like a stalled career.
And now, the turnaround could get even bigger, with a potential switch to Eintracht Frankfurt reportedly edging closer — something Zukowski himself admits feels almost surreal.
He said: “My career is certainly heading in the right direction and I hope it continues.
“The season has been amazing for me and I have really enjoyed it. Perhaps I could even have scored more goals.
“And then to make my debut for Poland was a very proud moment for me. I hope I will get more opportunities in the future.
“As a child, my dream was to play for my country and I have done that now.”
For a player once written off in Scotland, his rise now stands as another reminder that careers can flip dramatically when given the right environment and opportunity.
