NafisaRangers’ summer recruitment strategy has made one thing abundantly clear: the club are searching aggressively for young players capable of becoming long-term assets rather than short-term fixes.
With Danny Rohl expected to oversee significant changes to the squad over the coming months, the recruitment department has cast its net across multiple European markets in search of emerging talent.
Midfield has remained one of the priority areas under review. The possibility of departures involving key players has only increased the urgency to identify suitable reinforcements, particularly footballers capable of operating in multiple positions while offering both technical quality and long-term resale value.
As a result, several promising names from Scandinavia have appeared on Rangers’ radar in recent months, with extensive scouting work carried out behind the scenes.
Unfortunately for the Ibrox side, however, not every pursuit ends in success.
One of Rangers’ most closely monitored young targets now appears destined for a different challenge altogether.
Rangers target Silas Andersen is reportedly scheduled to travel to Portugal on Friday to complete the final details of a transfer from BK Häcken to Sporting Lisbon, with the Gers ultimately missing out on a player they had tracked extensively.
The Glasgow club have been monitoring the Danish midfielder since the winter transfer window, with Danny Rohl’s side identifying him as a priority candidate at the beginning of January and making preliminary enquiries regarding a possible deal.
However, Rangers were far from the only club interested in securing his services.
German side 1. FC Köln also submitted an offer for the 21-year-old, only to see their approach rejected, while Turkish outfit Trabzonspor had been following the player closely since April after receiving highly positive scouting reports.
Despite strong interest from across Europe, it now appears Sporting Lisbon have won the race.
According to Swedish publication Expressen, Andersen is set to fly to Portugal on Friday ahead of finalising a five-year contract with the Primeira Liga giants.
The move has gathered momentum over recent weeks after Sporting agreed a package worth €7.5million, with a further €2.5million potentially payable through performance-related bonuses.
Andersen only arrived at Häcken in January of last year following a move from FC Utrecht, but quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers.
During his time in Sweden, he made 57 appearances and contributed nine goals while developing into one of the most highly-rated young midfielders in the league.
The Danish youngster also boasts an impressive youth international pedigree, having represented his country from Under-16 through to Under-21 level after first entering the national setup in 2019.
His ability to operate as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder or centre-back has significantly enhanced his appeal, making him an attractive prospect for clubs seeking tactical flexibility.
Sporting’s recruitment team ultimately moved swiftly to secure the deal and fend off competition from several interested parties across Europe.
With Champions League football awaiting him next season following Sporting’s second-place finish in Portugal, the move offers Andersen a major platform to continue his development at the highest level.
For Rangers, there may be some disappointment at missing out on a player they admired for months, but the financial reality of the deal likely played a major role.
A package potentially rising to €10million would have represented a substantial investment for the Ibrox club, particularly without the additional revenue that comes with Champions League participation.
While Andersen’s immediate future now lies in Lisbon, Rangers are expected to continue monitoring his progress closely, knowing that opportunities can often reappear later in a player’s career—assuming, of course, that his value doesn’t skyrocket beyond reach following a successful spell in Portugal.
