TalkSport host and financial expert Stefan Borson has now revealed the number of points he believes Leicester City will be handed as their long-running Profit and Sustainability Rules saga finally heads into its decisive phase.
According to Borson, despite reports suggesting the Foxes could be hit with 9 or even 12 points, he expects the eventual sanction to land at six points for the club’s alleged financial breaches and PSR issues.
This prediction comes as Leicester City prepare for what is expected to be the beginning of their major hearing next week, following their Championship clash with Stoke City. The Premier League is pursuing three separate charges against the club, ending a dragged-out dispute that has overshadowed the club since their 2023 relegation.
Leicester’s financial troubles escalated after aggressively trying to maintain their position among the Premier League’s elite, with relegation delivering a huge blow to their revenue and reducing their permitted losses across the rolling three-year PSR cycle.
After earning promotion back to the top flight in 2023/24, the club was referred to an independent commission over an alleged breach of PSR for that same season. They are also accused of missing the December 31 deadline for submitting annual accounts, and of failing to provide the league with the required “full, complete and prompt assistance.”
The club previously found themselves in the dock for the three-year period up to 2023, during which they allegedly exceeded PSR limits by £19.5 million. They escaped punishment only by successfully arguing they were in a grey area — no longer a Premier League club yet not officially a Championship club — when they filed their 2022/23 accounts. That loophole has since been closed.
The Telegraph reports that Nick De Marco, one of the UK’s most prominent sports lawyers, and his team at Blackstone Chambers, who defended Leicester in 2023, are expected to lead the club’s case again next week.
Financially, Leicester have posted £201.6m in losses across the latest three-year cycle — though not all of this is counted under PSR rules due to exemptions such as academy and infrastructure spending. However, because one of those seasons was spent in the Championship, they are permitted losses of only £84.5m.
For context:
- Premier League clubs may lose up to £35m per season.
- Championship clubs are capped at £13m, plus a temporary £1.5m rise for 2023/24.
A final verdict could arrive as early as next month, but appeals could drag the saga through much of the season. Potential punishments include a fine or transfer restrictions — but the biggest talking point remains points deduction.
And according to Stefan Borson’s assessment, Leicester City fans should now brace themselves for a likely six-point deduction, rather than the harsher totals that have been circulating.
