Marti Cifuentes labelled his Leicester City squad as “a bit arrogant” and said they were punished by Wrexham for having “fake control”.
Cifuentes was at his most severe since taking charge at City after the 1-1 draw with the Welsh side, with a late goal conceded once complacency seeped in.
City controlled possession for long stretches but failed to generate enough opportunities for a second goal and then eased off too much, allowing Nathan Broadhead to strike an equaliser.
It means City’s search for a victory stretches to four fixtures, with each of those games finishing level.
Cifuentes was frustrated with his players, but also held himself accountable along with the effect of his substitutions.
“I’m definitely very disappointed because today I have a feeling we threw away two points,” Cifuentes said. “It’s all respect to Wrexham, they got what they deserved.
“We started the game very well. We had a good 45 minutes and scored a good goal and had good control. Perhaps the only chance they created was our own mistake.
“We spoke in the half-time about the need to keep pushing. There is no reality in this league about being absolutely dominant for 95 minutes. We need to keep improving to get there, to achieve this level of dominance. We need to score three or four goals.
“We spoke about the need to keep pushing but unfortunately in the second half we slowly started to drop. My honest assessment is that we were a bit arrogant. We thought the game was totally under control.
“The reality of football is that it’s a game full of mistakes. Even if you feel a lot in control, something can happen, something unpredictable, a brilliant moment from the opposition, a mistake, and then the game can change.
“I think we didn’t understand what was needed in the second half. I’m disappointed with myself, I’m disappointed with the bench impact, I’m disappointed with the feeling that we finished the game because today was a day we needed the three points.”
Cifuentes remarked in his first interview with the club about the necessity to keep pushing for more goals even when City are leading, but his side did not follow through on those instructions.
Elaborating on the issue of complacency, the manager added: “It was thinking that the game is so under control that even if it’s 1-0, we’re going to win this.
“My thoughts are that even if you’re 1-0 and leading, try to score the 2-0. If it’s 2-0, try to score the 3-0. That’s what the fans deserve and that’s what we as a team want to achieve.
“The fact we felt in good control for many minutes. It’s a bit of fake control. Control is winning 4-0. That’s control. If not, you are always on the edge. We were punished today, in a deserved way.”
