Ismaïla Sarr received a hero’s reception back in South London on Thursday, after returning to Palace training earlier in the week following Senegal’s triumph at a second Africa Cup of Nations.
The Palace No. 7 enjoyed a memorable winter international campaign with Les Lions de la Teranga, clinching the AFCON crown with a 1-0 victory (after extra time) over hosts Morocco to add to his previous success in 2022.
The final marked Sarr’s 80th appearance for his country, having featured in five of Senegal’s seven matches during the tournament, registering one assist in the process.
He was fittingly honoured by Palace players and staff at Copers Cope, receiving the customary champions’ Guard of Honour from teammates and coaches as he returned to South London turf.
“Thank you everybody,” Sarr smiled. “I’m happy to be back here – let’s go to win against Chelsea!”
Also spotted back in training alongside him were Daniel Muñoz – who has missed the Eagles’ previous 12 fixtures due to injury – and Chadi Riad, who made his first Premier League matchday squad appearance in over a year against Sunderland last weekend.
Despite heavy rainfall, spirits remained high in training as the Eagles intensified their preparations for Sunday’s London derby against Chelsea at Selhurst Park (25th January, 14:00 GMT).
