AS Roma are reportedly optimistic about securing Leicester City midfielder Boubakary Soumare in a cut-price deal during the January transfer window.
Soumare’s current contract with the Foxes is set to run out at the end of the campaign, meaning that if no renewal is reached by the new year, he will be entitled to begin discussions with foreign clubs over a potential pre-contract agreement.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Roma are eager to capitalise on the situation, with their interest in the Frenchman said to stretch back to the summer of 2024.
The report indicates that Soumare could be available for under €10 million in the mid-season window, as Leicester aim to avoid losing the 26-year-old for free.
Soumare joined the King Power Stadium side with a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young midfielders, but he has occasionally struggled to fully justify that early promise. Even so, he has grown into one of Leicester’s key figures over recent campaigns.
In the past two fixtures, the Frenchman has been named among the substitutes by Marti Cifuentes, featuring for just four minutes overall. However, he started the previous seven Championship games, underlining his overall importance to the side.
Leicester currently occupy third place in the Championship as they push for an immediate return to the Premier League.
Should Soumare depart in January, it would create a notable void in the Foxes’ midfield. Yet, considering the club’s ongoing financial constraints, Leicester may feel obligated to sell rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.
