Leicester City boss Marti Cifuentes has expressed his annoyance at his team’s inability to convert one of their three clear opportunities to snatch a winner against Coventry City.
Despite generating the better chances and forcing Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth into several saves, City couldn’t find the net against their rivals.
Stephy Mavididi squandered the match’s best chance early in the second half when he was located by Jordan Ayew. He let the ball roll across his body before his right-footed effort was smartly stopped by Rushworth.
Jordan James nearly opened the scoring on his first start for the club early on, while Julian Carranza was unlucky with a header at the back post. Speaking after the scoreless draw, Cifuentes insisted his side ought to have taken one of their three gilt-edged chances.
“[I’m] never happy with a draw,” he said. “Definitely felt that we could have taken three points, but at the same time, we played against a good team.
“We started well in the second half, the first 20-25 minutes were very good. Overall, three big chances for us – JJ [James], Julian and Stephy – to score at least one goal. They had one as well in the second half that we lost when building up.
“It was a game against a tough team that felt some improvement in our performance, but at the same time, [we have] that feeling, after a draw away, we needed the three points.”
Pressed on whether he is irritated with his squad’s lack of finishing touch in the final third, he said: “Yeah, of course it’s frustrating [but] I would be more concerned if we weren’t creating chances and were flat in the last third. That’s not the case.
“So it’s on me that we keep improving because the players are trying really hard, I know and see how they are training. It’s a team that is committed and today was a step forward in many areas of our game.
“Now, football is not just about deserving but achieving so in the future we definitely need to make the difference and take the chances.”
