Crystal Palace have now opened discussions over a potential move for a £50m forward with “frightening pace”, after registering strong interest in landing his signature.
Palace keen to strengthen attacking options
Palace are enjoying an impressive Premier League campaign and remain genuine contenders for European qualification, but their Europa Conference League run has been far less convincing, with disappointing losses to AEK Larnaca and Strasbourg.
Speaking after the defeat to the French outfit at the end of November, manager Oliver Glasner made it clear he wants to reinforce his attacking options during the upcoming transfer window, saying: “We have to support the players. This is what we will do. It’s the only thing we will do, support them, encourage them, stay positive. The second thing [to improve in attack] is to buy a player in January.”
Glasner’s desire to add firepower comes amid uncertainty surrounding Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Selhurst Park, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly preparing a bid for the Frenchman, who has scored seven Premier League goals so far this season.
As a result, Palace may need to consider recruiting a new striker in the near future, and they are also said to be keen on versatile Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson, who can operate through the middle or on either flank.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Eagles have now made informal approaches over a move for the Welsh international, alongside two other unnamed Premier League sides, with Spurs increasingly open to a sale.
At present, the north London club value Johnson at £50m, but there is a belief they could approve an exit for a slightly reduced fee, with his inconsistent form reportedly frustrating Thomas Frank.

It is somewhat surprising that Spurs are considering letting the Wales international leave, given that he has consistently contributed goals and assists since joining from Nottingham Forest in 2023.
The 24-year-old also played a pivotal role in Tottenham ending their long trophy drought last season, scoring the decisive goal as his side defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final.
