Frank McAvennie says he’s “heard a rumour” that Rangers and Celtic players collided in the tunnel area following Sunday’s stalemate — and he praised Julian Araujo for his part in the mayhem.
Celtic battled back to snatch a point at Ibrox thanks to Reo Hatate’s leveller converting on the rebound after his penalty was initially stopped which triggered wild celebrations in the away section.
Tempers flared at full-time and Araujo was spotted exchanging words with Mikey Moore, who appeared to shove the Mexican before being restrained by teammates from both sides.
Hoops manager Martin O’Neill sprinted onto the field to help defuse the situation, while referee John Beaton managed to restore order swiftly.
Sky Sports then switched away from the scenes on the pitch to begin their post-match breakdown, but according to McAvennie, the altercation may have carried on inside the Ibrox tunnel.
Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank podcast, the ex-Celtic forward was asked about Araujo’s behaviour and revealed he had “heard a rumour” about events that unfolded after the final whistle.
He was subsequently questioned by host Simon Houston over whether there “might have been a scuffle in the tunnel.”
And that’s when McAvennie responded: “There might have been one or two bangs, allegedly. The wee Mexican, with a Scottish accent and blond hair. Well done, that’s brilliant. That’s my boy.”
The fierce rivalry will resume just a week later at the same ground, with the sides preparing to face off again in the Scottish Cup this weekend.
