Rangers are keen on Leicester defender Conor Coady, who previously disclosed that he owes his elite career to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
New head coach Russell Martin is eager to strengthen his squad with dependable, high-caliber talent as Rangers’ campaign begins in a month with a critically important Champions League qualification match against Panathinaikos.
The Gers have been investigating transfers for several Premier League-tested players in recent days, notably Bournemouth full-back Max Aarons, who is poised to join on loan after previously shining for Martin’s longtime club Norwich City, and seasoned Leicester centre-back Conor Coady.
Sky Sports revealed earlier this week that the Ibrox club are ‘very keen’ to sign the latter, although they face rivalry for his signature from his former team Wolves.
Leicester have already been contacted for discussions, and the Foxes are understood to be open to selling the 10-time England international following their drop to the Championship.
Coady on Celtic boss Rodgers:
Should the 32-year-old opt to join Rangers, he would be set for an intriguing reunion in Glasgow as his former coach Brendan Rodgers is on the opposite side of the Old Firm divide.
Coady was guided by the Celtic manager during his early years at Liverpool, and speaking back in 2020, he credited the 52-year-old with challenging him beyond his comfort zone and steering him toward professional achievement.
“Brendan Rodgers was good to me when I was young,” Coady said. “I had a season training with the first team at Melwood, learning off them. That was big for me, but I always knew it was tough.
“I knew at some point I’d have to come away from Liverpool to really experience being a first-team player. It was the best decision I ever made, and Brendan was great for that; he pushed to send me on loan and try to improve my game.
“Liverpool were always getting better, they were always improving, and the players in my position were ridiculous. But I just wanted to play football.
“I knew where I was at, the type of level I was at, but I just wanted to be part of a first team, playing in games which meant something, playing against men.”
Martin on new signings:
Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday, Rangers boss Martin confirmed that the Scottish giants are planning to bring in multiple reinforcements ahead of the clash with Panathinaikos.
“I think we’ll have a few before the European game,” he said. “That’ll be for sure. I honestly don’t know [how many].
“Everyone’s working extremely hard, that’s what the bulk of the work has been in the last week or so – identifying character and talent we want in the building, which can add to us and add to the group and add culturally and in performance.
“I’m excited about the people we’re starting to look at, and we’ll hopefully add.”
